Module 1 Discussion Board

Background information

Publications where scientists explain their research and findings are called journal articles. These articles include information on the research topic (what is currently known and the question the scientist is trying answer), the research methodology, and any results, which are used to answer the question. In the article, this information is organized into the following sections:

· Title: short statement that describes the question being answered

· Abstract: summary of the article

· Introduction: introduces the article and contains current information on what is known about the topic, which will lead to further explanation of the researcher’s question

· Methods: how the study was performed

· Results: data from the study – usually includes tables and graphs

· Discussion/Conclusion: interprets the results relating to the original question

· References: list of literary sources used in the article

Instructions

Part 1: Initial post (60 points)

Your initial post will contain four parts which are explained below. Please be sure to number each part in your post. Be sure to follow the instructions in the “How to Create a Discussion Board Post” found in the discussion board.

1) Go to the website “Science in the Classroom” and pull up the article “Does Bad Luck Cause Cancer?”: https://www.scienceintheclassroom.org/research-papers/does-bad-luck-cause-cancer (opens in new window). For this assignment, you will focus only on the ABSTRACT.

· On the left side of the website, you will see a gray box titled “learning lens.” Click on the yellow box beside “glossary” (a check will appear). This will highlight specific terms in yellow. List and define the terms that are highlighted in the abstract only.

2) After reading, summarize the abstract using your own words. If you need any help with this, feel free to contact me.

3) List one thing that you found difficult to understand (or are still having difficulty understanding…this is ok! There are times when even scientists struggle with reading parts of an article.) Explain why you found this difficult (i.e. was it terminology, or do you not remember much about cells, etc.).

4) Create a citation for the article (be sure to use the information in the “paper details” section of the website). Feel free to use either MLA or APA format. If you need a refresher on how to create a citation, please visit the following websites:

Part 2: Responses (40 points)

You will respond to two classmates’ initial posts. Be sure to follow the instructions in the “How to Respond to a Classmate’s Post” found in the discussion board.

· For your response, you will comment on the information that your classmate had difficulty with. Did you also struggle with that information? What makes it hard to understand? Do you have any other information or advice that would help your classmate understand this better?

· Your responses should be at least 75 words each.

Discussion Board Rubric

Use this rubric as you write your initial post and respond to your peers. This is the same rubric that I will use to grade.

· Initial Post – 60 total pts

· Part 1: Term definitions = 10 pts

· 10 pts = All terms are correctly defined

· 7 pts = Three terms are correctly defined or there are minor mistakes in definitions

· 4 pts = 1-2 terms are correctly defined or there are multiple mistakes in definitions

· 0 pts = Terms were not defined or did not follow directions

· Part 2: Abstract Summary = 30 pts

· 30 pts = Summary reflects complete understanding of abstract; included all main points; appropriate length

· 20 pts = Summary reflects moderate understanding of abstract; 1-2 main points were missed; inappropriate length (short by 20 words or less)

· 10 pts = Summary reflects minimal understanding of abstract; main points are missing; inappropriate length (short by 30 words or less)

· 0 pts = Abstract summary was missing or did not follow directions

· Part 3: Content Difficulty = 10 pts

· 10 pts = Listed difficult topic and thoroughly explained

· 7 pts = Listed difficult topic and partially explained

· 4 pts = Only listed difficult topic and did not explain

· 0 pts = This part was missing or did not follow directions

· Part 4: Citation = 5 pts

· 5 pts = Citation is present with no errors

· 4 pts = Citation is present with 1-2 errors

· 2 pts = Citation is present with 3-4 errors

· 0 pts = Citation is not present

· Grammar and Spelling = 5 pts

· 5 pts = No grammatical and spelling errors

· 4 pts = 1-3 grammatical and spelling errors

· 2 pts = 4-6 grammatical and spelling errors

· 0 pts = 7 or more grammatical and spelling errors

· Reponses – 40 total pts

· Response 1 = 20 pts

· 20 pts = Appropriate length with insightful comments

· 14 pts = Minor errors in response length or comments

· 7 pts = Inappropriate response length or comments

· 0 pts = Did not respond to classmate’s post

· Response 2 = 20 pts

· 20 pts = Appropriate length with insightful comments

· 14 pts = Minor errors in response length or comments

· 7 pts = Inappropriate response length or comments

· 0 pts = Did not respond to classmate’s post
