Ethics Module 13 Homework

This assignment supports Module Objectives 1-3

Note: This homework can serve as a draft of Section VII of your capstone.

For this homework we will practice applying creative problem solving methods to ethical dilemmas from our fields of study. First, think of a real-life ethical dilemma from your own field of study (you can use one of your dilemmas from Chapter 12 homework/capstone). This is a "right vs. right" type of dilemma that we reflected on previously, one that you may well face as a professional in your field. The dilemma is often posed as a question: "Should we do X or Y?", where X and Y are the actions we need to choose between, and both X and Y are "right" in the sense that there are plausible reasons to recommend them. But of course we cannot choose to do both, hence we are in a dilemma!

So, we want see if the creative problem-solving methods might suggest some other courses of action (maybe X or Y aren't the only choices, actually), or help us to decide between X and Y in a creative way. For these exercises we will use the methods of exotic association, reversal and exaggeration, and the intermediate impossible. (See the Quick Reference on these methods on p. 447.) Answer the following exercises:

1. State your real-life ethical dilemma from your field of study as a question. Explain the dilemma and how it might arise.

2. - Employ the "exotic associations" method to your dilemma. Document what random words you chose and what creative ideas they led to regarding your dilemma. (understand and demonstrate "exotic associations" creative problem-solving method and its use in ethics)

- Employ the "reversal and exaggeration" method to your dilemma. Document what normal features of the dilemma you chose to reverse and exaggerate and what creative ideas they led to regarding your dilemma. (understand and demonstrate "reversal and exaggeration" creative problem-solving method and its use in ethics)
