ECED 6263 Module 10 Check Your Understanding Problem Set

5 problems

Read the directions carefully

Be sure to use the methods asked for in the directions and to show steps so that your thinking can be understood

Foundational facts: Twos

Connecting division to multiplication

1. Write a story problem that will help students understand each strategy for multiplication listed below. Then explain why your story problem can help students understand the strategy.

2. Describe or demonstrate a task that will help students understand each strategy for multiplication listed below. Then explain why your task can help students understand the strategy. (Your tasks do not have to be story problems.)

Foundational facts: Fives

Foundational facts: Ones

Foundational facts: Zeros

Nines

3. For the multiplication fact 9 x 7, demonstrate each of the following strategies. Support your reasoning for each strategy with an explanation or representation.

Adding or subtracting a group (you can choose either adding or subtracting a group).

Doubling and halving (there are three approaches: double and double again, double and one more set, half then double. For this fact, you will likely use double and one more set).

Break apart (decomposing)

4. Let’s explore how arrays can connect multiplication to properties of operations.

Kids find it fun to build arrays out of various objects, so here are some options for you to choose from. Choose one object for your array, and:

Build an array to represent 6 x 7.

Break down the array in at least 2 ways.

Explain why you broke the array down in those ways and what properties are related in both cases.

Each of these objects have duplicates underneath. You just need to drag and drop to make arrays. You don’t have to copy and paste.

5. Solve the problem below using an array. You can use any of the objects if you would like. Include an explanation of why you broke the array down in the way you did.

Mr. Cardona’s fourth grade class was performing Clue the Musical Jr. The school theater had 22 rows with 13 seats in each row. How many people will be able to see the play?
