Locate the code of ethics for your discipline or potential career field. Choose three issues (1.5-2 pages) included in the code and copy and paste the three issues into a Word document.
Explain why each of the three issues could be helpful to someone working in that area - why they are important to your profession. An example is the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics. Doctors, lawyers, electricians, business marketing, accounting, etc., also have codes.
You can find an example below, my major is mechanical engineering, try to write differently than what provided in the example. The example is provided to help you understand the task requirement.

Engineers (ASME). The code of ethics is directly from ASME’s website [1]. The society breaks down ethics
into fundamental principles and canons.
The Fundamental Principles
Engineers uphold and advance the integrity, honor and dignity of the engineering profession by:
1. Using their knowledge and skill for the enhancement of human welfare;
2. Being honest and impartial, and serving with fidelity the public, their employers and clients; and
3. Striving to increase the competence and prestige of the engineering profession.
The Fundamental Canons
1. Engineers shall hold paramount the safety, health and welfare of the public in the performance of their
professional duties.
2. Engineers shall perform services only in the areas of their competence.
3. Engineers shall continue their professional development throughout their careers and shall provide
opportunities for the professional and ethical development of those engineers under their supervision.
4. Engineers shall act in professional matters for each employer or client as faithful agents or trustees, and
shall avoid conflicts of interest or the appearance of conflicts of interest.
5. Engineers shall build their professional reputation on the merit of their services and shall not compete
unfairly with others.
6. Engineers shall associate only with reputable persons or organizations.
7. Engineers shall issue public statements only in an objective and truthful manner.
8. Engineers shall consider environmental impact in the performance of their professional duties.
1. The most concerning issue for me as an aspiring mechanical engineer is the safety, health and welfare of the public. At the end of the day this fundamental issue is the most important as it keeps mechanical engineers honest in truly only making products or items that help or increase the safety of the public. This is important to any mechanical engineer because products that he/she develops or releases to the public must be safe and improve the safety, health and welfare of the public not jeopardize it. If an engineer believes that a product is not safe then the product should not be released before it can be determined that the product is safe for the public. This also encourage others to speak up when he/she believe something is unsafe.
2. Another large issue is the area of competence. ASME lists this as the second fundamental canon and reads “Engineers shall perform services only in the area of their competence.” This is important because only knowledgeable and proven engineers should be working on products or issues. This issue relates directly back to issue number one concerning the safety, health and welfare of the public. Individuals that are not qualified to be performing a task should not be allowed to do so. This is a fairly common ethical standard for many industries. Having a degree is obviously one step in becoming competent in a service but if an individual does not feel comfortable or confident in he/she’s abilities they should notify a manager and not take place in any work.
3. Lastly, the environmental impact is another huge issue. As a mechanical engineer it is important that environmental impacts of products are considered. Currently this is a large debate across industries. Particular with mechanical engineering, oil companies are under scrutiny for their environmental impacts. I believe this provides a healthy pressure on companies and engineers to continue to innovate and create better products. Again, this issue relates back to the first fundamental issue of safety, health and welfare of the public. If engineers can continue to reduce environmental impact the safety, health and welfare of the public is protected were as skimping on environmental impacts can greatly harm the public.
All of the issues outlined in the engineering code of ethics from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers dictate how mechanical engineers are perceived. If the industry begins making unethical decisions by not considering safety, public wellbeing, environmental effects and professionalism the industry as a whole will lose credibility and trust from the public. I believe the public trusts mechanical engineers to develop and build safe products. This is important to maintain that trustin the public. Having a code of ethics provides a document and framework to keep individuals accountable for actions that do not align with guidelines.

These business customs are also changing as technologies and international experiences evolve.

Example: I chose France and Googled “France business etiquette.” On the website http://www.cyborlink.com/besite/france.htm (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. , I learned that the French treat punctuality very casually and frequently interrupt each other in personal and business conversations. When applying for job in France, you are required to include information on your resume that would be illegal in the United States, such as photos, age, number of children, and marital status. In France, this information is used in the hiring process. The French are very proud of their long history in world affairs and culture.
The French feel that Americans speak and laugh too loudly and tend to lecture rather than converse. If I was meeting French business associates, I would lower the volume on my voice, prepare a complement on their cultural history, dress conservatively, speak more conversationally, and not be offended if they interrupt me or each other.
