CNF:

Being a 21-year old male college student, I can say that I am well versed with life having numerous experiences. Although I have greatly advanced and achieved in my academic life, I can undeniably say that this has not been any easy. In fact, it is hard work that has propelled me this far. Throughout my K-12 school and high school, I have always been determined to excel. This is what has solidly built my academic foundation and enabled me secure a slot in college where I am furthering my education with a hope and ambition of excelling.

This is not something that I have just noted in me. I can say that I am a responsible and a hard-working student. My friends also agree that I am a good student and that I like to study. My favorite subjects are English and literature. I am pursuing a course with both of those subjects backing it. In college, my goal is to study these subjects and to become a respected professional in one of the related fields.

Moreover, being a sociable person, I have had many friends since I like to communicate with people and get to know new interesting individuals. I enjoy my time at school: it is really nice and wise to study diligently. Owing to my social nature, my colleague students are very friendly and ready to help. It is this friendly atmosphere that cannot but make me want to be in school every time.

It is also notable that my friends say that I am a very funny and interesting with a good sense of humor. This makes me make fun with my friends who are not offended and this has nurtured my friendship relationship with them. These relationship ties have enabled me to create a large network of friends. After all, it is networking that has given people an upper hand during job searches which awaits me in the near future after completing my studies.

It is also worth noting that as soon as I meet new people who are happy to meet me, I feel extremely comfortable with them. I believe that friendship is one of the most important values in human life. We exchange new ideas, find many interesting things about each other and experience new things. I appreciate friendship and people who surround me.

Meeting new people who support all my efforts to grow and develop my skills not only in the subjects but also in my hobbies gives me a lot of energy. I met most of the friends who surround me in the playing fields as I enjoyed my hobby. I am a basketball enthusiast. This leads to my favorite player being Lebron James of the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). I do not deny that there are also other talented players but according to me, James outdoes them.

It is very exciting when you see players while in the pavilion making numerous tricks against their opponents to make a score. Fast break, alley-oop, cherry-picking are just but examples of the actions in basketball that are enthralling to watch. I feel happiness inside seeing how happy people are when they enjoy a basketball match if not a tournament. People sit while watch but stand as they cheer their favorites.

Paul and Ava are just but two among my many friends who I met during a basketball tournament. They are always there with me whenever there is a basketball match or tournament. In this way, both of them have become part of my life. Paul in particular became my best friend and we both believe that we meant to meet because he studies the same classes and we have similar life goals.

While all these are side activities I share with my friends, I can say that Paul has been instrumental in helping me cope with college life that has its own fair share of challenges. There are times one has to conflict with friends. These conflicts need to be managed prudently so as to avoid hatred and physical engagements. It should be understood that conflict resolutions enables people move along. Consequently, life becomes ease in the school setting where diversity is appreciated but is likely to cause chaos.

In school, I like to receive and deal with challenging tasks. I am a very enthusiastic student and I think this is a strong point of mine. This is what makes it easy for me to interact with others and solve any conflicts with ease. I acknowledge that success comes with hard work. Therefore it is my belief that dealing with challenges is not an option but a necessity if I am to succeed.

I will engage in my academic life with the commitment needed because I know at the end of the day, success will be mine. It is worth mentioning that, success in life may be associated with academic success and excellence, but having academic knowledge of countering life challenges is more important. I will continue my interaction, networking, and friendship in college so as to attain my desired academic goals. This will solidify my chances of succeeding in life and having the knowledge to face life not only career-wise but also act as a step for furthering my studies.

Poem:

What is love?

When I think about love I break in fear

Is it the warmth of her smiling?

Is it the sparkles in the eyes before I depart?

Oh, what is love?

Then I get the tingling feeling in my ear

Like my ice is melting

Like my flesh is tearing apart

Is this love?

Not only does my flesh tear

But inside I am bleeding

Like a blade cut across my heart

Is this love?

But then I think about her it’s clear

And I know what love is

Short Story:

Chester the Motivator

Time seems to trudge along in the full auditorium of Best Performers High School. The stench of hot and sweaty bodies seeps out from the seeming corpse bodies that occupy the auditorium seats. It was a typical scorching day in the New York town, as the temperature was a blistering 107 degrees. Chester was the only one who wasn’t breaking a sweat, as he was relaxing in his seat, creating a checkerboard pattern on his Rubik’s Cube. He was waiting to give his high school graduation speech that he had prepared to offer for weeks. He had never given a speech before which made him a bit nervous. Although it seemed to be a fulfilled high school, the whole scenario seemed to be just a dream.

Chester Williams was always the overachiever of his class. He still received straight A’s on his report cards, and he has never scored lower than a 95 percent on a test. He was a genius based on the performance. Being born and raised in an impoverished and unstable family, it seemed as if his intelligence and academic excellence were going to go to waste. Chester’s father, Joseph was a raging alcoholic, who regularly abused his family, and never kept a stable job. Chester’s mother, Martha, was not much different. She too abused drugs and alcohol, but not entirely on such a large scale. She was a selfish, middle-aged woman, who did not seem to care about the wellbeing of any of her three sons. Despite all those back draws, Chester took them as a stepping stone towards achieving his goals. He had the vision to improve his family’s life completely. He knew he would never shame his parents in school.

It was finally the graduation date, and the bright desert sun that glared through the windows was frying the graduates alive. There seemed to be an aura of composure in the air since most of the graduates did not seem to care that they were completing another chapter of their lives. Most of the students did not plan to obtain a postsecondary education anyway, because they did not feel like they had the intelligence to do so, let alone the money. That was the mindset that most of the residence of Tumbleweed, Arizona had a sense of indifference and pessimism. However, to Chester, this graduation date meant everything to him. He had big plans for the day.

After a while, the graduation ceremony was at the knock. The big day for Chester was here with him. Principle Mathew welcomed the event and started his anticipated program of the day. However, as the Principal was giving his speech on how proud he was of all his students, Chester was hundreds of miles away in his little world. He couldn’t help but daydream about what his new life was going to be like working for Microsoft. Chester imagined himself living in a quiet, gated neighborhood ninety miles away in Scottsdale, or in a vast extravagant mansion somewhere in Beverly Hills. He felt like his opportunities for success were endless, and he couldn’t wait to break free from the chains he thought that the school was fettering him to. Therefore, all the speech of the principle hit a hard rock. He never heard even a single statement. Perhaps, he was removing his nervousness by engaging in deep thoughts.

As the time of speech approached, the principle hospitably welcomed Chester to come on the stage. Without even realizing it was his turn to take the podium, Chester continues to daydream about his future, while subconsciously messing with his Rubik’s Cube. He was completely zoned out. “Chester, what are you doing?” nudged Mark-Chester’s best friend. “What?” replied Chester, confused as to why he knocked him out of his trance. “It’s your turn to go up there.” The Principle has already given you the stage. Chester delayed which made the Principle to be quite impatient. He called Chester for the second time. The gazing crowd started arguing of how that student was disobedient, but to Chester, that meant nothing. Nothing would separate him from achieving his long-forecasted vision.

After some moments, Chester made his way up the stage. He was given a handshake by Principal Mathew, and Chester gave him a halfhearted smile, he knew he almost embarrassed him. Despite all, Chester took the long-awaited podium. Chester gazed out into the sea of people and tried to come up with what he was going to say. Chester was about to speak in front an audience of 500 people that didn’t seem to care whether he gave a speech or not. After about five seconds or so, he had his speech planned out. He was ready to go.

“Hey everyone, good morning” he started. “Let me start by saying that it is a great privilege to be speaking in front of you in this great event. Thanks to Principle Mathews for giving me part of the event’s time. May I say that I am honored to have shared these past four memorable years with such an amazing group of people.”

A few people start to clap. They were all proud of this poor boy as most knew their parents. But then it quickly dies down. Mr. Josephat and Martha, Chester’s parents, were not new to this congregation. They were well known for their misbehaving actions. Therefore, Chester’s speech seemed heaven and hell thing in comparison to his parent’s behaviors. He received a lot of compliments. Afterward, Chester continued. “Now there are many of you whom I have become rather close to during our time here at Best Performers High, and I just want you all to know how truly thankful and blessed I am to have developed those friendships.” Another sea of feeble claps fills the auditorium, but this time with a little more oomph. Chester continues again.

“Now most of you might be watching me up here thinking ‘oh great; now this guy is going to be up here preaching about how important grades are and how awesome he is for being the valedictorian, and blah blah blah.’ Well no, that’s not what I’m going to do. Instead, I want to tell you guys much I sincerely appreciate the time that we shared and that it was true. Lastly, I want to give a preview of my life history. My life in Best Performer High was not that straight. There were ups and downs throughout the course. There were various limiting factors which I was able to conquer effectively. I am proud to be born in Crotona in the Bronx. Although Crotona is one of the poorest places in New York, that fact did not make me not to achieve my dream.” Shears were heard from every corner of the hall. He continued “My poor background has no place in my future. No, I cannot give it a place in my life. Thanks to my mum and dad, I appreciate the little help they have given to me. Although most of you think they were helpless, they greatly struggled to sustain my very immediate basic needs.” Up to this point, most people were already sympathizing with Chester. “That is so touching.” Many of them said. Chester continued with his legated speech. Signs of pity faces were evidence in the congregation.

Towards the end of the speech, Chester said. “Thank you so much for standing with me throughout these years, and I hope that you are successful in achieving whatever you choose to pursue after high school. God bless everyone.”

As Chester exited from the stage, a sudden violent swarm of clapping engulfed the room. He did not expect this at all. He waved to the crowd as he marched back to his seat and then sat down to continue his Rubik’s Cube. Mitchell congratulated him upon his return that also seemed not to have known Chesty at all. The principle was back on the podium. He highly appreciated Chester’s speech. He said, “I guess this was the most touching and motivating story of the year.”

Up to the end of the graduation date, a lot of students were incredibly motivated by Chester’s speech. They saw that the problems they were encountering were nothing compared to Chester’s life. The whole graduation was named after Chester. It was called Hero Chester the Transformer Graduation. Meaning it was the most fabulous day that a lot of students transformed including Chester’s parents. Since then, Chester was nowhere to be seen or heard. Where might have he gone?
