Display of the Ten Commandments
America is a society of rules, and the Ten Commandments represent the very basic rules
under which many societies exist and have based their laws. In every elementary, middle, and
high school classroom, a set of rules is posted on a bulletin board. Schools should also post a
copy of the Ten Commandments next to class rules in every classroom. Students might not agree
with the class rules, but they are still expected to conform to them. Similarly, citizens are
obligated to obey laws or to accept the consequences.
Good laws are not intended to be offensive. Laws exist so that people can live in an
orderly society. God exists, and “there are those in America who understand that God exists, i.e.,
the God of the Bible, the Creator of humanity and the Supreme Ruler of the Universe.” The Ten
Commandments provide an opportunity for us to live in peace with one another regardless of our
religious beliefs. God is not a religion. God may be the core and focal point of religious faith, but
He, Himself, is not a religion. Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and the like
are religions (Miller).
The Commandments tell us not to steal anyone else’s stuff, not to lie to each other, not to
murder anybody, not to cheat on our wife or husband, not to wish we could have our neighbor’s
wife just because she looks good, not to want any of our neighbor’s junk, not to worship idols,
not to use God’s name in a bad way, not to tell lies about our neighbor, to recognize God as God,
to honor our parents, and to keep the holy day holy.

The Ten Commandments contain no hate, no envy, no offensive language, and no
unrighteous intolerance. Displaying them on a wall inside a classroom would certainly not
damage anyone’s character nor would it keep students from getting a good education. In school,
for example, students are not apt to read the Ten Commandments and run out of the room
screaming that they want to be baptized.
Certain people will always violate laws and ignore the common rules of decency, but that
is no excuse to be lawless. People make bad choices regardless of the severity of the
consequences. Neither commandment nor law will stop incivility or criminal behavior.
One of our oldest legal codes is the Ten Commandments. At least three different areas of
America's Supreme Court display the Ten Commandments, and one of the depictions displays an
image of Moses holding the commandments. Time has come to take God’s Laws out of the
schoolhouse cloakroom of censorship and to display them with dignity.

Some Basic Essay Formatting Guidance
• Before typing anything on a document, set the line spacing to “Double” and do not change it.
• Before typing anything on a document, set the font size to 12 and do not change it.
• Before typing anything on a document, set the margins (left, right, top, bottom) to 1 inch and
do not change them.
• Place your last name and page number ½ inch from top of each page of all writings. If you
are using Microsoft Word, use the "Insert" and "Page Number" tabs for an easy way to do
that. The same applies to users of Google Docs. After inserting the page number, place the
cursor to the left of the number, type your last name, and space. Then, make sure that you
click out of the header before typing anything else on the page. Your last name and page
number will automatically update on each page of the essay.
• Left-align the text of an essay. Do not use “Justify” or block style.
• Use a standard font. Example: Times New Roman.
• Press the “Tab” key once to indent the first line of every paragraph ½ inch. Do not use the
space bar to indent. Indent the easy way.
• Paragraph indentations should be set to zero. That will not affect pressing the “Tab” key to
indent.
• Center the title of the essay and the title of the Works Cited page. Do not use the space bar to
center the title. Center the easy way: Hold down the Control (Ctrl) key and press E.
• Before submitting an essay, always perform a quick format comparison with the model
essay, including the Works Cited page when required.
