Multicultural Education (TED 1400)
Now that you have learned about some effective teaching strategies to ensure that all children in your classroom are learning successfully, and you have done a practice activity for finding these strategies in a lesson, we are going to apply those strategies to an actual lesson. You are going to enhance the lesson listed below by inserting and using these strategies.
If you have not done the Thinking Activity in this Module's Readings, you should do that activity prior to this graded activity.
The lesson you will use for this DB is: Lesson For Unit on Teaching Strategies.docx
This is a lesson which can be good for several grade levels. You can choose between the grades levels listed in the lesson, but choose ONE grade only. Remember you do not teach different grade levels the same way!
Read over the lesson plan and decide where you can insert some of the strategies from this module into this lesson to make it more multicultural. Choose 2 (only 2) of the following to add to this lesson:
1) Critical Thinking Skills: teach or use a critical thinking skill (for example, a specific critical thinking skill such as compare/contrast, evaluation, analyze, predict, estimate, observe, etc). Make sure you don't just use the word, but what you do promotes or teaching that specific critical thinking skill.
2) Critical Thinking Questions: add at least 3 effective questions in two different parts of the lesson (3 questions for each part). Make sure these are high level thinking questions and are open ended in nature to promote thinking.
3) Hands On Learning: make the lesson more kinesthetic (hands on). This includes making the lesson more real life,or having children actually touch and do things. Make sure this is meaningful learning!
4) Cooperative Learning Structure: use a cooperative learning structure (Think-Pair-Share, Numbered Heads Together, etc).
5) Group Work: use group work effectively, (not through the use of a cooperative learning structure). Brainstorming would fit here, but so would general group work (discussion, observation, complete a task, etc)
6) Wait Time: use wait time effectively and add in at least 2 places in the lesson. Make sure to tell how you would use wait time, not just use the words wait time!
7) Learning Modalities: add more visual and/or auditory components to the lesson (total of 2: 1 of each or 2 of one type). Make sure to make this meaningful learning!
You will put all the information below on this chart.
Teaching Strategies DB Chart.docx
You do need to put in specifics and details-the chart will expand as you write.
For each strategy, give the following information:
1. List the strategy. Use the wording listed in bold from Items 1-7 above, so everyone in the class knows which strategy you are discussing.
2. Explain where in the activity/lesson you would put this strategy (introduction, procedures, or closure) and exactly where in that part.
3. Explain in one paragraph or so how you would use the strategy in this particular part of the lesson. Include directions to students, steps, etc. if needed. Write enough so that any reader would be able to picture in their head what you will be doing exactly with students. You need to give enough specifics and details so that it is clear you actually understand the strategy and how it would enhance that part of the lesson for the chosen strategy. Just using the words of the strategy is NOT showing understanding of the strategy! This should be at least one paragraph long. If you do not show clear understanding of the strategy you will not earn any points for your posting to my prompt (1/2 of the discussion board points).
You will do this for each of the 2 strategies you choose.
You only have to submit this chart as your posting to my prompt. Nothing else is needed for this half of the DB.
Remember that you still must respond to at least one classmate's response.
Remember to be respectful of other views and perspectives.
