Assignment Overview

According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (n.d.), “The Institute of Medicine defines health care quality as ‘the degree to which health care services for individuals and populations increase the likelihood of desired health outcomes and are consistent with current professional knowledge.’ ”

The Institute of Medicine further defines quality as having the following six properties or domains:

1. Effectiveness. Relates to providing care processes and achieving outcomes as supported by scientific evidence.
2. Efficiency. Relates to maximizing the quality of a comparable unit of health care delivered or unit of health benefit achieved for a given unit of health care resources used.
3. Equity. Relates to providing health care of equal quality to those who may differ in personal characteristics other than their clinical condition or preferences for care.
4. Patient-centeredness. Relates to meeting patients' needs and preferences and providing education and support.
5. Safety. Relates to actual or potential bodily harm.
6. Timeliness. Relates to obtaining needed care while minimizing delays.

Case Assignment

Review the following source:

Wyszewianski, L. (2014). Chapter 2: Basic concepts of healthcare quality. In M. S. Joshi, E. R. Ransom, D. B. Nash, & S. B. Ransom, (Eds.), The healthcare quality book: Vision, strategy and tools (3rd ed.). Retrieved from the Trident Online Library.

In a 2- to 3-page paper, you are to write an essay providing the following:

1. Rank the 6 domains in order of importance starting with the most important to the least important.
2. Define, discuss, and explain the importance of each domain. Be sure to cite reliable sources.
3. Provide a rationale to support your rankings for each domain. The use of health care examples is encouraged and citations from reliable sources to support your rationale are required.

Your essay should have 8 robust paragraphs: an introduction, a paragraph for each domain (6 paragraphs to make up the body of the paper), and a conclusion.

1. Conduct additional research to gather sufficient information to justify/support your thoughts and analysis.
2. Limit your response to a maximum of 3 pages.
3. Support your proposal with peer-reviewed articles, with 2 or 3 references.
