Generic Types of Business Processes and IT Systems

Modular Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this module, the student will be able to satisfy the following outcomes:

  • Case
    • Demonstrate the ability to analyze or evaluate differences between at least three levels of an organization, regardless of structure.
    • Critique, assess, or make recommendations to processes operating at three levels of an organization.
    • Distinguish the differences between the types of information technology systems operating at the three levels of an organization.
    • Distinguish and contrast differences between at least two components for process complexity.
    • Be able to analyze and apply the five basic components of a business process according to business process engineers.
  • SLP
    • Analyze an identifiable research problem within the context of a selected organization.
    • Develop a series of proposed research questions designed to address the identified research problem within the selected organization within the DSP process.
  • Discussion
    • Take a stance and defend why a process is not a process without the five components (input, resources, constraints, activities, and output).

Module Overview

 Business processes exist at every level of the organization and across the same level of organizations. Processes may be simple (ie. the repeat themselves easily) or complex (they are different every time). IT systems operating at different levels of the organization have different purposes. A process has 5 components, the input or start, the resources used to accomplish it, the constraints that guide it, the activities or task, and the outputs. A high level process may have several sub-processes. We continue the journey of understanding processes reviewing what a few researchers or authors have said about levels or organizations, levels of processes and their associated IT systems, process complexity, and components of a process. You should be able to articulate that a process is not a process without these 5 components and the same components exist in processes at all levels of the organization and in all organizations.
