Early Childhood Special Education

Part A

I want you to look at http://www.washingtonpost.com or https://www.nytimes.com/  for an article which is about special education. You may only choose an article that is from October 10, 2019 or later (you may have to look more than once). You can look in any section of the newspaper.

Find: an article which is about special education (laws, issues, specific disabilities, medical news, etc.)

Write:

1.  The date, section and name of the article. 

2. The url for the article. If the url does not work, you will not earn any credit.

3.  A summary of the article.

4.  How it relates to special education in general.  (be specific).

Please note that if you use another source or an article from a different time period than listed above you will earn 0 points. 

Part B

This lesson plan template aligns with a new evaluation tool that all teacher ed students use at the 4 year colleges. The evaluation is called edTPA and all teacher ed students are measured on it. We will not fill in all of the parts of the template, but it is a good structure for organizing and designing your lesson plans and gives you practice using it so you are prepared to see it when you transfer. 

You will use this template to write your lesson plan. Write in the blank template and it will expand as you write.

Please note that Differentiation means Accommodations. Make sure to have at least a few accommodations for each area of the lesson plan that says "Differentiation" for the disability you choose. 

See the directions for the template if you have questions about what goes in each section.

Remember that this is a special education class so the differentiation parts/accommodations are a major focus of this lesson plan. You CANNOT earn any credit on this lesson plan if you do not have accommodations written into your lesson!

I don't mind if you use a lesson plan from another class that you have used before, but for this class you must use the template attached, and you must fill in all parts of the template asked for. If you only cut and paste what you have done previously, you will not be successful with this assignment! If you do not use the template, your grade will be a 0. If you do not include accommodations in ALL sections in the template where accommodations are asked for, your grade will be a 0.

You will need to choose the following for your lesson plan:

1. Disability: Choose ONE: General Learning Disabilities, Language Disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorder

2. Content Area: Reading/Language Arts or Math

3. Age/Grade: Age 4, PreK, K, or grades 1, 2 or 3 are appropriate. Choose ONE.

Remember that you are writing a whole class lesson plan for a general education classroom, where you are adding accommodations for this lesson for included children with special needs (whichever disability you choose above).
