SECTION B: Research Information |
B1: Title
|
The Milgram Obedience Study: Effect of Authority on Obedience |
B2: Introduction
Please provide a brief (350-500 word) summary of your research project, including background and rationale for your study. Be sure to include in your description what kinds of data you are planning to collect as part of your research (e.g., surveys, interviews, observations, etc.).
|
The study seeks to determine the effect of authority on obedience. This is achieved through the investigation of the as well as observation of the individuals’ behaviors in Nazi Germany. The sample of this study will include 40 males whose ages range from 20 to 50 with jobs ranging from unskilled to professional, from the New Haven area. The participants will be paid paid $4.50 for just turning up. These Participants will be given roles to be either as a learner or a (the participants will draw straws thinking they have an equal chance of being one or the other, but will always be the teacher). In this case therefore, the learner will be the learner while the teacher will be an actor and therefore will play as the moderator putting on a white lab coat. Therefore, the learner will be placed in a separate room in an electric chair while the teacher will be placed in a different where he/she will be able to hear the learner, however, not able to see him. In such a situation therefore, the learner will be provided with a list of word pairs then requested to memorize the pairs of word. Thereafter the teacher will potentially list the words then the learner will be asked to recall the related pair. Once the learner makes any mistake, an electric shock is administered to him/her by the teacher (it is important to note that in this case, the learner will not be shocked hence there isn’t any electric shock risk). Every time a mistake is made by, he student, then the teacher is also requested to increase the shock (the shock will range from “Slight Shock” to “Danger: Severe Shock”). The actor in the while lab coat will give the teacher several rehearsed prods that will help in encouraging him/her to continue with the experiment. Generally, monitoring and observation of the teacher’s behaviors a necessity. Therefore, interviewing of all the participants will be done through the use of open-ended questions, projective measures, as well as attitude scales. Then the participant will be introduced to the teacher for reiteration of the idea that the shocks administered weren’t actual. In this case therefore, the Researchers out to enhance a lot of are that will ensure that the participants leave in a state of well-being. However, a lot of emphasis will be made that will help in ensuring that tension of any form experience during the experiment are decreased. |

SECTION C: Review Type |
C1. Does the study involve greater than minimal risk? (Minimal risk means that the probability and magnitude of harm or discomfort anticipated in the research are not greater in and of themselves than those ordinarily encountered in daily life or during the performance of routine physical or psychological examinations or tests. More than minimal risk will require Full Committee Review.)
Place an “X” next to the appropriate response.
[_X_] Low/Minimal Risk [__] Greater Than Minimal Risk
C2. Which level of review do you believe best matches your research (Exempt, Expedited, or Full)? For more information, view the categories on the APUS IRB Website.
[__] a. Exempt
[__] b. Expedited
[_X_] c. Full Board Review

SECTION D: Project Purpose/ Research Question/ Objectives |
|
In non-technical language, address the following: 1) Topic and scope of the study. 2) Research questions or hypothesis. 3) How this study will contribute to knowledge in the field. |
|
1) The topic of this study influence of authority on individual obedience. 2) In this case, it is hypothesized that participants are potentially able to inflict higher shock values on the learner because of the authority’s influence as well as encouragement.
3) The comprehension of hoe authority influence obedience will help individuals to comprehend the reason as to why individuals are likely to follow terrible dictators, for instance Adolf Hitler, and then hoping to reducing the obedience in the same events in the future.
|
|
SECTION E: Participant Population and Recruitment |
|
E1. In non-technical language, address the following: 1) Who will the participants be? How many participants? What ages will the participants be? 2) What is the inclusion/exclusion criteria for participants? 3) Where and how participants will be recruited? |
|
1) The Participants of this study will consist of only adult males
2) The ages of these male participants will typically range from 20 years to 50 years old and these participants ought to be naïve or must not be aware that the study aims at obedience. 3) The assumption is that the Participants will only be aware that they are taking part in a memory study.
The Participants of this study will be recruited through a newspaper where they will be offered $4.50 just to participate ..
|
E2. This study will involve participants with the following characteristics (place an “X” next to all that apply):
[_X_] a. Not Applicable (e.g., de-identified datasets)
OR
[__] Individuals who cannot read/speak English
[__] Individuals living outside of the United States
[__] Students of PI or Research Team Members
[__] Students to be recruited in their educational setting (i.e. in class or at school)
[__] Staff, Faculty, or Students
[__] Minors/Children
[__] Prisoners
[__] Individuals with diagnosable psychological disorders
[__] Individuals who are institutionalized
[__] Individuals who are poor/uninsured
[__] Pregnant women
[__] Fetuses
[__] Nursing home residents recruited in the nursing home
[__] Individuals who are cognitively impaired
[__] Individuals who are psychiatrically impaired

[__] Other (Specify below):

SECTION F: Research Design |
|
In non-technical language, address the following: 1) State the study activities in chronological order. Describe both the activities conducted by members of the research team and the activities of research participants. (e.g., screening, survey, taking a test, answering questions in an interview, completing a specific task, tasks on a computer, running on a treadmill, debriefing, etc.) If videotaping, photographs, or audio-taping will take place, explain how and why recording will occur. 2) Explain how the data will be analyzed or studied; that is, indicate the quantitative or qualitative data analysis methods you will use. 3) Explain how the data will be reported in order to maintain the confidentiality or anonymity of participants (i.e. aggregated, anonymously, names used with consent, participants only identified by professional role, etc.). |
|
1) The initial stage of this study will involve provision of consent by the research team to the participants. After that, the participant will be allowed to draw a straw stating where they will play the role of the teacher. After that, the researchers will provide an explanation of the word pairing process to the participant together with the shock generator. An explanation is then provided by the researchers concerning the fact that despite the shocks being painful, they aren’t strong enough to result in lasting harm to the learner. After that, the authority asks the participant to start, ask learner to recall word pairs. The participant will then be provided by a prod that help in encouraging them to continue. Debriefing of the participant is then done in addition to providing the participant with an interview that is basically open-ended questions, projective measures, as well as personality questionnaire. The introduction of the participant is then done by the researcher followed by an explanation that it was all fake and the actor received no shock at all. After that, it is important to counsel the Participants to prevent any disarrayed emotions on their side.
2) The results of the study will depend on the analysis of the stopping point of the participant (discontinuation of the shock), reactions as well as the behaviors as the experiment progresses
3) The identities of the participants is private and confidential. |
