MLA Format for Essays

Page Formatting Checklist: Specific rules are used when formatting
an essay using MLA Format.
1. Font: Times New Roman, 12pt font
2. Spacing: Double Spaced (with no extra spacing between each item)
• to eliminate this space, check the box on the “Paragraph Screen” used the adjust spacing.
3. Margins: • right and left margins must be 1”.
• the top and bottom margins should be ½”.
• In most cases, these are the default margins.
• Do not adjust these to attempt to make the essay appear longer.
• Do not push paragraphs to the second page.
CREATING A UNIQUE TITLE Title your Essay
• Each essay must have a title that you create.
• Depending on the tone of your essay you can make the title fun, serious, ect. It should make the reader curious enough to read the essay.
Unacceptable Titles
• Do NOT use the title of the work; they are already using that one.
• Do NOT start a title with “Analysis of ..”
• Do NOT use the name of the assignment.
• These things can be used in a subtitle if your choose to have one.
5 Paragraph Format • When learning to write, a five
paragraph method is used.
• Paragraphs should be 5-10 sentences. The goal is to ensure that each paragraph is well thought out.
Format:
The essay will contain:
• Introduction (1 par.) • Body Paragraphs (3 par.)
• Conclusion (1 par.)
PLACING YOUR THESIS Thesis Requirements:
• This is one sentence that tells the reader what your paper is about.
• This should be the last sentence of the introduction.
EX. Thesis.
• Charlotte Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper” addresses the rampant patriarchy in the medical field in the 19th century.
WORKS CITED • Use 2016 MLA
• Cite as much information as you can for each citation (source) used.
• The Works Cited is a separate page at the end of the essay.
• Each source must be cited in the text at least once for credit. These are called in-text citations(link).
Formatting the Works Cited:
• Each citation is listed in alphabetical order.
• The second line of each citation is a hanging indent. (Enter→ Tab)
