Missions and Colonialism

Read about the Age of Missions section 4.4.2. Missions and Colonialism on pages 267 to 272. The textbook makes the assertion that there is a link between European colonialism and missionary expansion. 

Write 300 words on a possible relationship between European colonialism and missionary work. What do you think about mission work as a corollary of colonialism?  Be sure to note some of the counter examples that McGrath gives where missionaries resisted or criticized colonialism. 

1. Give a brief overview or summary of the key figures and developments during the age of missionary expansion  pp. 267 to 272. 

2. Give your own reaction to the rapid global spread of Christianity during this period.

3. What effects do you see when Christianity becomes associated with foreign powers or with colonial domination?
