Importance of vision and mission statement in strategic planning

Introduction

Vision and mission of any institution play a great role in ensuring that its aspirations and targets. They are also one of the powerful tools used to market the institution. Therefore mission and vision contribute immensely towards the organization’s success. Vision and mission enable an organization to lay out future development plans. The vision and mission help any institution to set its standard level of service delivery to be high. This paper will address different aspects related to the vision and mission of the hospital in the case study.

The following are the most suitable mission and vision statements for the hospital;

Mission: To improve health by providing high-quality care.

Vision: Provide the highest level of service in the county.

There are many factors that were considered before setting on the above mission and vision for the hospital. First of all the above mission and vision address the issue of services being provided. Any institution usually focuses on offering the best services to its clients. Therefore the hospital aspires to be one of the leading hospitals in providing not just health services but to offer high-quality health care services so as to satisfy the needs of its customers. Another rationale for selecting the mission and vision was the time period it will take to achieve it fully. According to (Oghojafor, Olayemi, Okonji, & Okolie, 2011) many business firms have come up with vision and mission statements which will take a long time to be realized fully. Therefore the firms should come up with missions and visions that can be achieved within a short period of time. The mission and vision were also selected because it is flexible in nature. It allows for future adjustments if need be. Another reason why the selected vision and mission statements are appropriate is that it is cost effective to implement it and therefore it would not cost the hospital a lot of resources.

One of the strengths of the vision and mission selected is that it clearly outlines the major activities; the hospital will devote itself to undertake. When the activities are clearly highlighted, the hospital will be in a position to offer services which are of high quality. Potential clients will also be in apposition to know the various health care services providing the hospital. It helps the business to formulate various policies that can help the hospital expand and increase the size of its market size. The roles are clearly defined hence every employee knows his/her basic duty and responsibility. The selected vision and mission statements are also in line with the hospital’s strategic goals and plans. This, therefore, is a significant argument. They also provide for ways in solving problems and solutions which may arise from time to time. They act as a benchmark in terms of the standards of offering health care services. This will enable health organization to be among the best institutions offering health care services in the county.

The weaknesses of the vision and mission statements not selected are that they are too generalized. They are not specific in nature. This makes them not presentable. They are not attractive. This will, therefore, become a stumbling block towards achieving sustained long-term progress. The vision and mission statements not selected do not give ways in which long term and short term goals of the institution can be achieved. The vision and mission statements are supposed to act as an engine of prosperity in any an institution that aims to be a well-established one in future. (Bryson, 2018) outlines the importance of vision and mission statement in strategic planning. The mission and vision statement not selected could not be in a position to adjust to any changes in future. They also do not outline the key specific activity which the hospital should undertake. They also did not incorporate specific marketing policies. The mission and visions which were not selected left out some crucial and important things which were supposed to be addressed. This includes the issue of how the institution will be best managed, useful techniques to market the hospital and many others. Some of the issues outlined in those vision and mission could be difficult to be put into practice hence pose some tactical challenges. The arguments were supposed to be practical in nature.

The following are ways in which mission and vision can help drive the strategic plans for the healthcare organization: The core values which are usually integrated with the mission and vision statements helps to understand how the institution is conducting its day to day activities. These values also outline steps through which the health care organizations can meet its ultimate goals and objectives. The professional conducts of its employees are also outlined. This will enable the healthcare organization to have a good in terms of the ethics which are guiding the behavior of its employees. The vision and mission drive the strategic plans of the institution of having best-qualified physicians and clinicians by highlighting the need to employ the staffs who are very qualified. The mission and vision help the organization to have a great focus on customer satisfaction. The health care organization will strive to meet all customer needs. They do it by offering the best and high-quality health care services to its customers. It is through the vision and mission statements that the health care organization is able to establish itself as one of the best health care service providers within the county it is located in. The health care organization will be involved in activities that make it unique out of the existing health care service providers. The mission and vision also assist in achieving the strategic plan of having the best management system. This includes the view on the relationship between the management of the health care organization and its employees. The best management techniques can be put into practice.

Conclusion

The mission and vision of any organization define the future aspirations of that particular institution. These encompass others factors among service quality and delivery, meeting customer needs, best management, and professional conduct among others. It can, therefore, be concluded that the mission and vision of an institution plays a significant role in achieving the organization’s strategic plans.
