In cinema, filmmakers also carefully orchestrate what we see on-screen, taking advantage of the four elements of mise-en-scene (setting, lighting, costuming, staging/performance) as effective storytelling tools. Each of these elements used together give meaning to what we see in the frame, and by extension how these moments relate to a larger narrative. Your goal for this assignment is to conduct a close reading of a film through an analysis the mise-en scene in one scene. Your paper should include a strong thesis statement, making an overall argument about the film. What does your chosen moment tell us about the film? How do the filmmakers use the elements of mise-en-scene to tell their story? What might the arrangement of puzzles and statues mean in Citizen Kane? How does the setting of the trainyard help establish themes in Wendy and Lucy, or the shoreline in Moonlight? Can we say something deeper about a game of chess in The Seventh Seal?
