Visit the Open Source Initiative's Web site at www.opensource.org. Summarize the mission of this foundation. Find the definition of open source on this site, and summarize that definition in your own words. Explain this foundation's role with regard to open source licenses. Summarize the process for having a license approved by the foundation. Describe the advantage of having the foundation's approval.

The mission of the Open Source Initiative is to raise public awareness on the issue of adopting open source software and bridging the gap between open source development communities (Söderberg, 2015). From the website, an open source system is defined as a software that has been developed and released under a license that allows its users to share, modify and make copies of the software, without worrying about any legal repercussions.

In order to have a license approved by the foundation, the software developer has to ensure that the software conforms to the open source standard that is defined by the organization. For example, the software has to be software independent and it must not restrict other software products etc. This is a well-known body that is recognized by governmental and standard setting bodies, therefore, having the foundation’s approval could greatly benefit open source developers.
