Alice’s Case

From the case of Alice the main symptoms that we can see include self-neglect, alcoholism, seems miserable and in a disturbed state of mind as seen from the fact she takes her doll as a real child and treats it as so and the fact that she is not able to offer sensible answers. From these symptoms which can clearly be seen from her short case, it is most probable that Alice is suffering from Diogenes Syndrome. This is a disorder that is characterized by symptoms such as a great level of self-neglect which we see in Alice as she fails to take care of her wounds and the fact that she is also dirty and in torn clothing. It is also characterized by the hoarding of trash and animal and this can be seen in Alice from the fact that he lives in dirt condition that is in the streets and this is evident through his dirt clothing (Bellenir, 1996). Further individuals with this condition are not highly accepting of medical assistance and we see this in Alice as she refuses to take her medication which she says makes her tired and gain weight. Usually this is a disorder that is characterized by individuals living in poor condition of life. This is highly consistent with the living conditions of Alice since we are told that she lives in the street and is obviously homeless. The fact that she neglects herself by not taking care of her body and also her health that is by taking her medication point towards this disorder. Other symptoms such as the disturbed state of mind she is in are as a result of other psychological disorders which she has been diagnosed with in the past and treated for them but she refuses to manage them and follow the treatment and this is as a result of her extreme neglect of self.
