Part 2: Humanities lens

Humanity emphasizes empathy and cultural awareness, which are essential in workplace diversity management and eliminate adverse consequences. Cultural awareness and empathy are highly valued in managing workplace conflicts and ensuring a good relationship between clients, employees, and management.

According to Ng et al. (2018), empathy is a highly desired workplace competence today. It refers to the ability to understand the feelings of others and make decisions that do not violate the rights, beliefs, values, and views of others. There are different challenges that employees face today, and these challenges are related to personal life and or work. Woodward et al. (2015) argue that the need to understand this uniqueness and challenges requires one to be empathetic and appreciate cultural diversity. Empathy is a component of emotional intelligence (EI). Emotional intelligence is highly regarded in leadership as it helps leaders understand how to control their emotions and relate well with others. According to Ng et al. (2018), the diverse and unique values and cultures in workplaces today need a leader who appreciates cultural differences. A leader should embrace cultural humility and cultural competence to handle diverse groups in an organization properly.

Cultural awareness emphasizes understanding other people's uniqueness which includes their beliefs and attitude. Cultural awareness means understanding other groups to ensure that conflicts do not arise because of cultural variations (Woodward et al., 2015). Leaders who are culturally aware of their employees' uniqueness identify ways to deal with it and understand that people have diverse opinions. All their opinions should be respected for the success of an organization. Through empathy and cultural awareness, employees can work as a team.
