Midterm Paper - Chapter 8 - Duke Ellington Paper Due: Tuesday 10/20 11:30 pm Instructions: This essay must be in either Word or PDF format. Nothing else is acceptable - if this is a problem please contact me in advance to discuss other options. This essay should be between 300 and 350 words. Less than 300 is not acceptable. If you need more than 350, please do not go above 400. Please double space, using nothing larger than a 12-point font and margins no larger than 1 inch. You must have paragraph separations— the various answers cannot be one long paragraph - these help with clarity of ideas and expression. There are five parts to this essay - you must complete them all. All work must of course be in your own words. Do not use any quotations. This is not a research paper, it is a personal reflection. Statement: Duke Ellington is important for many, many reasons. Not only was he a great pianist, composer, and arranger, but he was also a great bandleader. As a result, he was also a mentor for many of his side musicians that went on to be successful leaders of their own bands, many giving much credit to Ellington’s inspiring leadership qualities for their own success. There are many functions that a bandleader must perform, which is of course true for anyone in a leadership role. Essay Topic: After reading about Ellington, write an essay in five parts: 1a. Determine two leadership qualities that Duke Ellington possessed that stand out to you. 1b. Describe each in detail and how and why they stand out to you. 2a. Choose someone in public life - it doesn’t have to be a musician, but it can be - that possesses similar qualities. 2b. Describe these qualities, as well as why and how they stand out to you. 2c. Describe how these qualities relate to your perceptions of Duke Ellington.
