Philosophy 320: Science and Religion.

Answer any two questions in two pages each. Both responses must be critical, concise, coherent, and demonstrate a clear grasp of the question. Think through your answer before writing it.

Formatting guidelines for writing:

· Your responses should be typed, double-spaced on standard-sized paper (8.5” x 11") with 1" margins on all sides. You should use a clear font that is highly readable. I recommend Times Roman 12pt.

· Include a header with your last name and page numbers. Include a reference page with all sources your consult.

Please turn in a hardcopy of your exam. You can submit an electronic copy to avoid late penalty, but you must still bring a hard copy.

1. Briefly explain the concepts of realism, idealism, and instrumentalism as it relates to scientific theories (p. 76). Can these notions be used to account for religious beliefs? Keep your answer concise and critical.

2. Briefly explain the verification principles. What are the consequences of applying this principle to religious beliefs? Discuss critically.

3. Briefly explain the three creative acts of God discussed in our textbook (p. 87). Of the three, which one makes the most sense to you? Give two reasons for your choice. If none of them appeal to you, explain why?

4. Briefly explain the falsification principles. What are the consequences of applying this principle to religious beliefs? Discuss critically.

5. Briefly define the terms natural and revealed theology. What is the main difference between the two? In your estimate, how do these notions help us gain understanding of God? Give two reasons for your position.
