Hum 1 Midterm prompt

Due Date: Thursday, October 22, 2020 7 PM (Note: this is not a day that class normally

meets)

Paper Length: 5 pages- not counting works cited, approx 1300 - 1450 words.

This is based on roughly 250 - 300 words per page (a list of Works Cited does not apply

to the word count).

Point Value: this paper will be worth 225 points.

Sources: Please use at least 3 academic sources- none of which are Wiki or the ones

listed below. A list of ways to find academic sources should be in the Midterm module

as Resources. Sites like JSTOR and EBSCO are perfectly fine to use.

NOTE: You cannot use sources such as Wikipedia, CourseHero, UK Essays,

GradeFixer, SparkNotes, etc. (there are many others that I could list here that are the

same type of websites) as sources for your paper. These are NOT academic sites.

Choose only 1 from these 2 options for a topic for your Midterm:

Option 1 - Ancient Greece and Rome

Choose just 1 of these from the 2 prompts about Ancient Greece and Rome

PROMPT #1

Choose a play from Ancient Greece. (NOTE: you cannot choose "Oedipus" or

“Lysistrata” but use our close reading of the play as an example of what I’m looking for

in your paper. See pages 62 – 68, CH 3 in our reader on Ancient Greece for ideas.)

How were women portrayed in Greek society based on the play that you have chosen?

Is this picture consistent with the

view of women during the Golden Age of Athens in the fifth century B.C.E.?

You can choose one of your own, but please let me know first.

Here are some suggested plays you could choose to discuss:

By Euripides

● Medea

● Bacchae

By Aristophanes

● Women at the Thesmophoria (Thesmophoriazusae)

● Assembly Women

PROMPT #2

Choose a work of Greek or Roman art and compare it with a similar work from the

Renaissance. They should be connected through the same Humanities theme (of the 4

we use in this class) Discuss how we could understand each society through the work

of art you've chosen. (NOTE: you cannot choose a work of art we’ve analyzed and

discussed in class, for example, the statue of Augustus Caesar)

Option 2 - The Renaissance

PROMPT #3

Choose 2 paintings by only 1 of the following artists:

● Albrecht Durer

● Caravaggio

● Johannes Vermeer

● Frans Hals

● Artemisia Gentileschi

● Jan Steen

● Diego Velázquez, or

● Judith Leyster

Based on your research, explain what you believe the painting is about and how it

relates to 1 of the 4 themes that we explore in our class. Do this for each painting by the

one artist you have chosen.

1 artist + 2 works by that artist + 1 Humanities theme = Thesis.

NOTE: You cannot write on any work that we have discussed and shown in class.

Again please don't write on any of the works that we've already discussed (or will

discuss) in class as examples. That includes the 2 "David" sculptures (Donatello,

Michelangelo), Caravaggio's "David and Goliath", as well as "Judith Slaying Holofernes"

(by Donatello, Caravaggio, and Gentileschi). It also includes the statue of Augustus-

"Pax Romana" / "Pax Augustus".

In addition, I do not want you to write on Da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” and “Last Supper”, as

well as “Birth of Venus” and “Primavera” by Botticelli, and the Sistine Chapel by

Michelangelo. Thanks for avoiding these.

NOTE: I have provided a sample paper that I've written as a guide to help you see

what I'm looking for in a paper. You can find it on one of the following pages of

this Module.

Paper due date: October 22, 2020 7 PM (note: this is not a day that class normally

meets) and it will be worth 225 points.

Feel free to email me at any time if you have any questions. Good luck!

The following pages will provide resources for you to complete the assignment. They

include a list of academic databases for articles, textbooks, as well as virtual museums

you can visit online in order to help you with your paper.

I will also be including a sample paper that you can use as a guide to see what style I

want your paper to look like (i.e. MLA format). MLA format is fine for you to use.

As always, email me with any questions you have. I will also go over this in class, and I

may also make slight changes to the pages within this module in order to provide further

resources for you.
