Midterm

Due October 8, 2017 by 11:59 pm. This paper will be submitted to D2L. This deadline is nonnegotiable. Failure to submit this paper before the deadline will result in a grade of zero.

Paper Format: Two-pages double-spaced, 12 font in Times New Roman.

Citation Format: Students can use whichever style (Chicago, Turabian, APA or MLA) they feel most comfortable. What is of vital importance for this class is that every time you make a citation, that the author and page number be included within each citation.

Pick one essay prompt to respond to in an essay of no less than two pages.

Your essay should include the following

· Specific details, events, and evidence to support your response

· An introduction, body, and concluding paragraph

· Correct citations for any sources used

· You can use sources other than the course readings as long as you cite them

· A well-developed thesis/central argument

· See the rubric on page 2

1. One of the greatest intellectual debates occurred between Booker T. Washington and Dr. W. E. B. DuBois. Using your course readings, describe the debate between the two over African American education and the best way for African Americans to progress in life. On what issues did Washington and DuBois disagree? What were the similarities or differences between their strategies? What factors might have influenced their views?

2. Self-reliance has been an underlying theme of the course readings. Discuss the theme of self-reliance among African Americans using the NAACP and the African American quest for education as examples. What actions did African Americans take to advocate for themselves? What actions did African Americans take to rely on themselves to accomplish goals?
