Format:

• Please prepare a 3-4 minute response for each of the following questions, which are categorized as: (1) social location, (2) content, and (3) reading journal.

o State your response clearly and then draw evidence/details from the readings, class lectures, and notes from in-class discussions.

o You may have your notes written on one 5x8 yellow index card provided ahead of time by the instructor

o Advice: practice your responses with a timer to see if you are within the time limit.

(1) Social Location in a Global Context – 25 points

o In light of our discussion on global relations, choose at least two aspects of your social location: race, ancestry, place of origin, color, ethnicity, citizenship, immigration status, sex, gender expression or identification, sexual orientation, disability, religion, culture, political convictions, socioeconomic status, age, health conditions or marital, domestic, or parental status, or any other applicable category that frames your worldview.

o Consider how these two aspects of your social location intersect with one of the course themes of your choosing: global poverty, war, or the environment. What particular details from the readings caused you to reflect on these two aspects of your social location?

(2) Content Question (x2) – 50 points

o Global Poverty (1) How would you describe the ideology of US Exceptionalism? What is

one historical example and one contemporary example in relation to global poverty?

(2) What is neoliberalism and how does it contribute to the widening gap between the rich and the poor? What are some examples?

(3) Within Christian Ethics, what is the preferential option for the poor? What is the evidence for this concept with socio-historical analysis and what is its basis in biblical/theological analysis?

o War (1) What is the military-industrial complex? How does it impact

relationships between the US and other countries and what might be an example of this impact from class?

(2) What is genocide? Given our discussion of the ten stages outlined by Dr. Gregory Stanton, what do you think are some of the most applicable lessons from Auschwitz and Rwanda that we can apply to today’s current socio-political climate?

(3) How would you compare how Jewish (margins) and Christian (center) scholars have grappled with the question of God after Auschwitz?

o Environment

(1) What is environmental racism and what is an example of its presence both globally and nationally?

(2) What is a cry? What is the cry of the earth? What is the the cry of the poor related? How are they related?

(3) Why does McFague argue for an ecological anthropology and how does this reimagination of the human person impact her proposal for an ecological economics?

(3) Reading Journal – 25 points

in light having reviewed all of the readings/lectures/notes from in-class discussions.
