Micro Lab Case Study Report Format

The end of the year case study report will be a three to five page report written over a selection of Microbiology related topics. During in person Microbiology Labs, an Unknown Lab Report is assigned, but due to the difficulties in assigning this during online labs, a case study report will be assigned in lieu of an Unknown Lab Report. This report needs to be typed in paragraph form (no lists or bulleted points), needs to be Times New Roman, 12 point font, double spaced and must be written with complete sentences, proper grammar, and correct spelling. The Case Study will be worth 50 total points, the same value as your midterm and final exams.

The case study report will be due in 4 weeks on November 30th at 11:59 PM. Late reports will be not be tolerated, but if there are extenuating circumstances, you may email me ahead of the due date to explain. Case study topic selections are listed below:

Case Study Topic Selections

  • Antimicrobial resistance of antibiotics

  • Environmental microbiology

  • Virology – specifically related to Covid-19

  • Virology – specifically related to retroviruses

  • Microbiome - health of human gut flora

  • Microbiome - health of insect gut flora

  • Endospores found in nature

Please choose from one of the above topics for your case study and research the topic, utilizing the university online library, the internet, and microbiology textbooks. You must use at least two peer reviewed articles as sources for your topic, and you must include at least one research study which relates to your topic. Please summarize the case study that relates to your chosen topic, including the key points of their research, but you must use your own words to describe their findings. Case study reports should be 3 to 5 pages double spaced, typed in Times New Roman 12 point font, and should include a cover page, an introduction, body, and conclusion paragraphs, and a references page. Please include in-text citations throughout your paper, wherever the words are not your own original thoughts.

It is NOT acceptable for you and your fellow lab students to have the same case study report. Copied work is a form of plagiarism and will not be accepted. Since labs have been moved online, you and your friends in the lab may NOT have the same lab report or work together (total opposite of social distancing, of course!). Please utilize Purdue Writing Lab – APA formatting if you have further questions in regards to proper APA scientific writing, in-text citations, ect. The link is provided below,
