COURSE AT A GLANCE

COURSE DESCRIPTION This course provides the foundation for integrating health care finance and managerial accounting.

Opportunities for analyzing current and emerging health care financing trends are provided. Practical cost-

benefit strategies used in planning, controlling, and preparing internal and external reports are emphasized.

COURSE DESIGN Timely and accurate accounting information plays a critical role in health care industry. The rapid growth of

health care facilities and governing boards has substantially increased the need for health care professionals

and decision makers to understand financial and managerial accounting information.

This course progressively builds through the six weeks to provide students with opportunities to analyze and

evaluate finance and managerial accounting in health care industry. Opportunities for analyzing current and

emerging health care financing trends are also provided.

During Week 1, students will analyze and evaluate the importance of financial information in health care

organizations and the financial environment for these organizations. The common ownership forms of health

care organization along with their advantages and disadvantages will be examined. Students will analyze and

evaluate revenue cycle for health care firms and consider the roles of coding, charge masters, and claims

editing in these cycles. Major aspects of Medicare benefits will also be discussed. This study will be done

through the assigned readings from the text, articles, discussions, a written paper, and a Navigate simulation.

There is information included on healthcare finance basics for those who may need a primer or a refresher.

Week 2 builds from Week 1 and analyzes how legal and regulatory issues shape and define good financial

management of a health care organization. Health care reform and the most common federal regulatory

issues, such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and the Emergency Medical Treatment

and Labor Act, will be examined. Students will have the opportunity to analyze the elements of community

benefit listed by key policy groups, the basic methods of payment for health care firms, and five types of health

plans and their characteristics. The assigned readings from the text, articles, multimedia, a discussion, and a

written paper will support this week’s focus.

6

MHA612 FINANCIAL & MANAGERIAL ACCOUNTING COURSE GUIDE

In Week 3 students will learn the general principles of accounting. The basic financial statements will be

discussed, and students will learn how these are used for analysis and decision making. Students will also

learn how financial analysis differs for alternative health care firms. The assigned readings from the text,

articles, multimedia, a discussion, and a written paper will support this week’s focus.

Week 4 continues to build on the previous weeks and students will learn about the strategic planning process

and how the financial side impacts the plan. Students will also learn about the controls that management uses

in the budgeting and planning process and some of the financial mathematics that are used in decision

making. The assigned readings from the text, articles, multimedia, a discussion, and a written paper will

support this week’s focus.

In Week 5 students will learn about the costing process in health care, how it relates to planning, budgeting,

and control, and how to investigate variances as they happen with costs. Students will also learn how to

determine when organizations break-even with a profit. The assigned readings from the text, articles,

multimedia, a discussion, and a written paper will support this week’s focus.

This week students will learn about capital projects and financing options for the capital expenditures, the

impact of cash on working capital management, and the success and failures of mergers and acquisitions in

the health care industry. The assigned readings from the text, articles, multimedia, a discussion, and a final

written paper will support this week’s focus.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to

1. Analyze how legal and regulatory systems shape and define financial management within health care

organizations.

2. Examine the core principles of accounting that guide the preparation and dissemination of financial

information.

3. Conduct a financial analysis of alternative health care models.

4. Examine the requirements for effective financial planning and the steps involved in developing a

financial plan.

5. Assess how health care financial statements are used for budgeting purposes.

6. Evaluate capital formation strategies for health care organizations.

Discussions

1. Post Your Introduction. 1st Post Due by Day 1. Post a brief introduction on the first day of class. This

discussion is your opportunity to become acquainted with class peers and the instructor and to begin to

develop community for the class, which will enable you to have deeper and more engaging

conversations throughout the other discussions in the course. Although you may already be acquainted

with class peers and your instructor, this class is unique in that some of you have not met previously

and have not experienced this class together in this particular group composition. Therefore, consider

this discussion your opportunity to develop connections with peers and your instructor that can expand

and enrich your developing professional learning network, which will serve you well in and beyond your

degree program for support and inspiration in your area of professional practice.

In your initial post

• State your full name and, if applicable, any preferred name (e.g., nickname).

• State your location (i.e., the city or state where you live)

• State which program you are enrolled in and, if applicable, your specialization.

• State which course you last completed and the most significant thing you learned from that

course as it relates to your degree focus and/or professional practice.

• Review each weekly homepage in our course taking note of the assessments assigned for each

week. Then, describe the assessments you are most excited about completing and why.

• Review the course learning outcomes. Then, summarize what you already know about the

course topics in relation to those outcomes.

• Think about how the topic of our course is related to other courses you have taken and your life

experiences. Summarize how you think this course can support your professional practice in

your chosen field now and/or in future anticipated practice.

14

Guided Response: Respond to at least three of your classmates' posts. In your replies, ask questions

of peers about specific comments from their responses to encourage further conversation and learn

more from one another. Consider which assessments your peers are most excited to complete and

their reasons why. Ask questions that promote continued conversation about these assessments.

Additionally, consider what your peers know about the course topics and how they think the course will

support their professional practice. Ask questions to gain deeper insights about their existing

knowledge and plans for application. Though three replies is the basic expectation in this discussion,

for deeper engagement and community building, you are encouraged to provide responses to

questions others have posted for you to further the conversations. Doing so will give you opportunities

to network and get to know your instructor and peers for more optimal engagement in the coming

weeks!

Final Paper

1. Final Paper. Due by Day 7. Utilizing the concepts learned throughout the course, write a Final Paper

on one of the following scenarios:

• Option One: You are a consultant with 10 years’ experience in the health care insurance

industry. A group of 20 doctors is considering forming a new medical group. The group has

asked you to prepare a report on whether it should build a facility within 30 miles of the

downtown center of a city with a population of 500,000 for $100 million dollars. Prepare a report

for the management team of the doctor’s group on your proposed $100 million expenditure plan.

In your report, reflect on the key course objectives as well as the financial, legal, and alternative

health care models. In addition, reinforce your knowledge of strategic planning and capital

budgeting by using an electronic spreadsheet to display the financials.

• Option Two: You are a chief operating officer at a for-profit insurance company. A board of

directors has requested that you prepare a summary of the issues involved with a potential 40%

reduction in U. S. medical insurance reimbursement. Prepare a report for the board of directors

on how to address the proposed funding cuts while remaining sensitive to the needs and health

of the community and your patients. In your report, reflect on the key course objectives as well

as the financial, legal, and alternative health care models. In addition, reinforce your knowledge

of strategic planning and capital budgeting by using an electronic spreadsheet to display the

financials.

• Option Three: You are a chief administrative officer for a large nonprofit health relief

organization. A board of directors has requested that you prepare a summary of the issues and

how to solve the health needs of an African country. Your organization has limited funding and

will need to obtain subsidized medicine from major pharmaceutical companies. Your

organization also has the opportunity to get non-generic, non-USDA approved, alternative stem

cell derived medication from foreign sources. Prepare a report for the board of directors on how

to address the proposed funding limitations while remaining sensitive to the needs and health of

the African nation. Consider the various economic, political, moral, and health impacts for the

United States citizens who may have some of the health medication diverted to the African

nation. In your report, reflect on the key course objectives as well as the financial, legal, and

alternative health care models. In addition, reinforce your knowledge of strategic planning and

capital budgeting by using an electronic spreadsheet to display the financials..

• Option Four: You are a public official elected at the local city level who serves a population of

50,000 to 250,000 people. A budget of 10 million dollars has been allocated to you by the city

manager, and you can get up to 100% of this amount in matching federal funds if you meet the

federal standards. You have been asked by the mayor to determine how to allocate the budget

to best support the needs of the city. These could include, but not be limited to, supporting

capital requirements, operational requirements, and subsidizing nonprofit organizations or using

economic incentives to bring new private concerns into the city. Prepare a report for the mayor

and city council on your proposed expenditure plan. In your report, reflect on the key course

objectives as well as the financial, legal, and alternative health care models. In addition,

reinforce your knowledge of strategic planning and capital budgeting by using an electronic

spreadsheet to display the financials.
