COURSE AT A GLANCE

COURSE DESCRIPTION Business Intelligence uses technology to transform and analyze data into presentable information for decision-

making. Strategic planning is essential for sustainability and business intelligence tools help leaders make the

decisions that will positively impact the bottom line.

COURSE DESIGN Business Intelligence (BI) is widely used in the healthcare industry. Employers are seeking candidates who

have both an understanding of business intelligence and can apply some of the tools used it utilizes. This

course will be using a combination of assignments and case studies from a text as well as study materials from

the National Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) website (www.hfma.org) where students

can study and take the Certified Specialist Business Intelligence (CSBI) exam. HFMA provides the following

information on business intelligence: Healthcare organizational data has a wide range of uses. Healthcare

business intelligence can provide organizations with the ability to use their data to improve quality of care;

increase financial efficiency; strengthen operational effectiveness; conduct innovative research; establish

strategic directions and monitor progress towards goals; identify and manage risk.

OBJECTIVES of the CSBI:

• Recognize the phenomenon called "Big Data."

• Identify the concepts and tools of business intelligence.

• Recognize how information for better decisions is derived from large clinical, financial, and other

databases.

• Recognize the component-cost-service-finance dynamic in the healthcare industry.

• Identify the key point of leverage for analytics in the healthcare industry.

• Recognize the decision types and analytic tools that are part of decision management.

• Identify how data warehousing, reporting and analysis tools, and data systems architecture are

used.

• Apply the basics of analytical and quantitative skills of BI in healthcare.

• Understand and perform sampling.

• Recognize the role of business intelligence in stimulating action in the changing healthcare

industry.

6

Weekly Learning Outcomes

This week students will

1. Discuss the impact of healthcare analytics and meaningful use [CLOs 1, 3, 4].

2. Evaluate the benefits of provider clinical quality analytics [CLOs 1, 2, 3, 4].

3. Explain the use analytics to increase quality patient care [CLOs 1, 3, 4].

4. Identify the ways analytics benefits quality patient care [CLOs 1, 3, 4].

5. Describe the impact of regulations and clinical quality and patient safety [CLOs 1, 3, 4].

6. Evaluate the CSBI exam component applicable to Week 3 [CLOs 1, 2, 3, 4].

Introduction

Healthcare analytics provides the HCO with a process rather than transactions to evaluate the organizations

level of quality in respect to care delivery. Patients, such as the boomer generation provide an increasingly

educated base seeking answers to their questions as they participate in the continuum of care and demanding

proof of quality care and positive outcomes (Davenport, 2014). Health care leaders must provide an evidence-

based platform of clinical quality analytics.

Weekly Learning Outcomes

This week students will

1. Evaluate the providers in healthcare and how analytics are useful to them [CLOs 1, 3].

2. Explain how business intelligence impacts strategic planning [CLOs 1, 3, 4].

3. Create a simple database using technology tools [CLOs 1, 2, 3, 4].

4. Evaluate the CSBI exam component applicable to Week 4 [CLOs 1, 2, 3, 4].

Introduction

There are many stakeholders in healthcare. One group of stakeholders is the providers. Understanding the role

of each provider is essential to understanding the impact each has on the strategic planning process. In order

to analyze the impact, information is needed. One way to review this information is through the use of a

database. There are a variety of technology tools used to create and maintain databases. Understanding the

basic layout of databases will allow them to create a simple database for use with analysis.
