Module Overview

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) (n.d.), “governance in the health sector refers to a wide range of steering and rule-making related functions carried out by governments/decisions makers as they seek to achieve national health policy objectives that are conducive to universal health coverage” (para. 1). Moreover, governance includes but is not limited to:

· maintaining the strategic direction of policy development and implementation

· detecting and correcting undesirable trends and distortions

· articulating the case for health in national development

· regulating the behavior of a wide range of actors - from health care financiers to health care providers

· establishing transparent and effective accountability mechanisms (WHO, n.d.)

In the final module of this course, we will examine health care governance practices, structures, and models.

Assignment Overview

According to the World Health Organization (n.d.), “governance in the health sector refers to a wide range of steering and rule-making related functions carried out by governments/decisions makers as they seek to achieve national health policy objectives that are conducive to universal health coverage.” There are a number of governance models that are in use today and they continually are being evolved to meet the needs of the current healthcare environment.

Case Assignment

In a 3- to 4-page paper complete the following:

1. Identify the importance of governance structures in healthcare.

2. Discuss the differences in the structure of governance boards between nonprofit and for-profit organizations.

3. Identify and explain at least three (3) governance models in practice today.

In your scholarly paper, you should include an introduction and conclusion paragraph.

2. Limit your total paper to a maximum of 4 pages, not including your title or reference pages.

In Germany, they have adopted a dualistic board structure which is different from the board structures in the U.S. Research the German dualistic board structure and complete a 2- to 3-page comparative analysis of Germany’s dualistic board structure and the board structure(s) in the United States. Answer the following questions in your comparative analysis:

1. If the U.S. were to adopt a concept/attribute from Germany’s dualistic board structure to apply to board structures in our health system, what would it be and why? What would be the benefits?

2. Is a dualistic structure of governance viable for non-profit organizations? For-profit organizations? Why or why not?

Discussion: Types of Governance Assignment

 The two pillars supporting health care governance are typically categorized into either clinical governance or corporate governance. Define and discuss the differences between these two sectors of governance. Include in your discussion the limitations and advantages of each.
