STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT 2

                                                       Introduction

Companies rely on various aspects in their environment, either controlled or uncontrolled to

remain sustainable and outdo their competitors. Many global companies produce consumer goods

like Nestle, Unilever and P&G. these companies are in the same industry and one strategic mistake

can lead to the others overtaking them in sales. Out of all these, we will take a look at Unilever plc

on how it was founded and the different operations it undertakes its plans, strategies and also

evaluate its strategies.

Organization Overview

Unilever plc is a multinational consumer goods company with its headquarters in London,

England that was founded in 1929 after a merger between a Dutch company Unie Margarine and

British soap makers Lever Brothers. During the second half of the 20th century, the company

expanded its operations worldwide and made some acquisitions like Lipton and Brooke Bond and

other organizations making it one of the biggest companies in its industry. The organization boasts

of residence in over 190 countries all over the world and has over 400 brands under its name. The

organization has three main divisions; food and refreshments, beauty and personal care, and home

care. The brand products vary from tea, coffee, ice cream, breakfast cereal, pet food, toothpaste,

cleaning agents, beauty products, and personal care products. Its turnover for the year 2020 was 51

billion   Euros   and   a   net   income   of   over   6   billion   Euros.   They   mainly   emphasize   product

development and differentiation other than emphasis on geographical product needs.

Unilever’s   corporate   mission   is “to   add   vitality   to  life.   We   meet   everyday   needs   for

nutrition, hygiene, and personal care with brands that help people feel good, look good and get

more out of life (Young, 2017) while Unilever’s corporate vision is “to make sustainable living

commonplace. We believe this is the best long-term way for our business to grow (Young, 2017).”

Organizational Initiatives and Plan

One of the initiatives by Unilever is to make sustainable living commonplace through

various projects that it can control. It protects the climate and environment by having zero carbon-

emitting processes. The recruitment strategy ensures it meets the regulations by having equality and

diversity in its staff. Unilever reports all its financial statements in compliance with the law and

communicates all this to its investors in an AGM.

The organization plans to improve the health of the planet, people’s health, confidence, and

well-being and contribute to a more socially inclusive world (Compass, 2021). The health of the

planet will be improved through its initiatives in climate action, protection and regeneration of

nature, and a waste-free world.

SWOT Analysis

  Internal Factors Strengths

It has a wide range of consumer products that make it well-positioned to

change as consumer preference changes around the world.

Its research and development departments are well-financed and come up

with innovative ideas that have been accepted by the consumers.

Through economies of scale, the company can use it as leverage to get

finance and continual sale of products (Juneja, 2020).

.

Weaknesses

STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT 4

Its products can easily be substituted in the current market by other goods.

It operates in a very volatile competitive industry where it can be

outplayed by other organizations.

  External Factors Opportunities

Unilever has a good reputation when it comes to social and environmental

responsibility thus able to tap into consumers who want sustainably

complete products (Juneja, 2020).

The growth of the western lifestyle through global media will enable

Unilever to grow their western products to the new line of consumers who

want to be associated with the western lifestyle ideology (Juneja, 2020).

The conscious consumer is an area where it has not been tapped into but

Unilever has leverage to develop and market a health-conscious product

under its many brands.

Threats

Unilever scores highly in Corporate social responsibility and consumers

have come to critically analyze its every move. This poses a challenge to

maintain the standards.

The global pandemic has hit the business world and so has it affected

Unilever by having reduced revenues and increased costs.

STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT 5

Evaluation

Unilever’s strategy and plans have been good and have worked over the years. However,

there are different aspects to their trade that need to change to ensure survival in this ever-changing

environment. Unilever uses product branding and developing economies of scale as leverage.

Having residence in more than 190 countries, Unilever can use that to refine consumer needs

aligning   with  the  needs   of   the  consumers  from  a  geographical   area  to  increase   its   turnover

(Prospect, 2019). Intensive plans have to be formulated to survive in the competitive industry

(Prospect, 2019). Unilever's growth depended on the free trade relation that it enjoyed while Britain

was  in  the European  Union. The  exit  has  strengthened  Unilever’s  competitors.   Its  corporate

responsibility will be a game-changer for the company as the world changes to a more consumer

conscious market.

Conclusion

Overall Unilever’s organizational structure and strategies have been a key ingredient for

their success. They have been able to diversify their portfolio in a manner that diversifies risk to

different products. However, their industry is highly competitive and changes have already been

felt amid the current pandemic where diminishing revenues may negatively affect their operations.

New strategies need to be employed with the current changes in the operational environment.
