Part II: Short Answer Questions
You are required to write short answers to ALL SIX (6) of the following short answer questions below. (As a guideline, roughly 4 to 6 robust paragraphs in length with appropriate examples). Each short answer is worth up to 25 points apiece. <150 points possible>
Answer ALL of the following questions. Clearly indicate the question you are answering.
1. From your study of Chinese, Latino (South Texas, including structural and cultural bias), and cultures of the Americas (e.g., Mexico, Haiti, Honduras, Paraguay), compare and contrast the connection between culture and education. What are the implications for business? Explain.
2. Assess this statement within the context of course learning: “Minority status depends more on the treatment a population receives and how much wealth and power they have. Sociologists generally define a minority group as a category of people who control less power and wealth relative to their population size and who are subjected to negative stereotypes and discriminatory treatment” (Batos, p. 265)
3. What cultural navigation/agility tools have you developed throughout this course? How have you and your group been able to employ these tools (or not) within your cultural navigation virtual teams? How might you use these new tools/skills in the workplace? Explain. Use multiple examples as appropriate.
4. Compare and contrast the various definitions of culture offered throughout the course (see course readings [i.e., Hall, Hofstede, Brett, Adler]). What are (and are not) the critical elements of culture? How ought this knowledge be employed in managing cultural differences and diversity in a global economy? Explain. Use multiple examples as appropriate.
5. How are guanxi, face, and trust intertwined in Chinese culture? In Chinese business culture? In cross-cultural interactions between Chinese and other cultures? Explain. Use multiple examples as appropriate.
6. From your study of culture, what motivation strategies, decision-making models, and management styles might work best in various cultural work settings we have studied (e.g., China, Mexico, South Texas, USA, Haiti/Honduras/Paraguay) and elsewhere? Explain (illustrate your answer with specific workplace examples).
