[email protected]

CLASS LIBRARY VISIT FROM OUR ONLINE LIBRARIAN

Why am I visiting your class?

You have a final research project to complete for this course!

The research project requires you conduct research using the library

The library has some great resources to help you and the Berkeley college librarians are here to help you find it 

Project Requirements

Every student is required to complete an original business research project at the end of Week 13. Your original business report can discuss a weekly objective of the class, a main or sub chapter topic of the textbook or any topic related to operations management.

Your report MUST include detailed information on a current problem or area of excellence in a product or service company related to your selected topic.

Project Requirements

Examples:

Your selected topic must contain a company and an operations management or strongly related topic.

a)      Supply Chain Management of Target

b)      Total Quality Management of Toyota

c)      Competitive Advantages of Walmart

d)      Product Design  of Apple

e)      Competitive Strategy of Starbucks

Project Requirements

Your report MUST be submitted with at least three (3) sources from the Berkeley College Library's Online Databases.

Your report must not be limited to in-text references but must also include all sources cited using APA Citation guidelines at the end of the report.

.

These slides will show you how to use one of our library databases, ABI/Inform (ProQuest) to find an article relevant to your paper, an example of a written paragraph using information from that article and how to site it.

Then you have time to practice this by following the assignment in the Discussion Board for Week #3. The more you practice this skill, the easier it will be to write your final paper!

NO FEAR !

To find articles in the Berkeley College Library Databases, Access the Library Website from your class link or the Engage portal:

Click on the A-Z Database icon:

The library subscribes to over 80 databases as you will see from our A-Z Database list.

The databases listed below are the best ones to use for this assignment!

For this presentation we are going to review searching in ProQuest ABI/INFORM Complete.

**Please take the time to explore all the Business databases listed on the previous slide on your own**

For the purpose of this example, my topic is:

COMPETITIVE STRATEGY OF STARBUCKS

I know a little bit about what competitive strategy means from what I read in Chapter 2 but now I am curious about how this applies to Starbucks.

Competitive Strategy

Business strategy

Operations Strategy, Marketing Strategy and Finance Strategy

Competitive Priorities

Productivity measures

Operational efficiency

Strategic Role of Technology Productivity and competitiveness

Some keywords I can use from the chapter are:

14

Perform a Keyword Search for Your Topic

A “keyword” is a word (or a set of words) that best describes your topic.

I am starting very basic with strategy and Starbucks and then I will narrow my search down from there.

Let me show you how

strategy and starbucks

Way too many results!

I am going to narrow my results by Publication date and Source Type

2013-2018

17

Publication Source Type

The reason I took out Wire Feeds, reports, Blogs/Podcasts/Websites is because in my experience the results from these sources are not always very relevant or academic in nature for the purposes of my business research.

You can practice by keeping these sources in your search and then taking them out to see the differences in your results !

Publication Date

The reason I limited my search dates to the last five years is because I want to be sure the information I find is more recent.

My New Results

I am interested in hearing about Starbucks and their focus on Teavana

19

This news article is relevant because it is from this month announcing that it is closing Teavana’s retail locations but will sell Teavana teas in all of it’s 27K coffee sops.

This is relates directly to my company Starbuck’s latest business strategy.

I go back to my search results and scroll down past more Teavana articles to see what else looks relevant…

If I cannot find much else I will go back and revise my search.

I can either revise my search from before with different limiters or

I can test out some of my other keywords using the Advanced Search feature.

More Help Searching: Company SWOT Reports

There are also many other search strategies within ABI ProQuest to discover, such as finding a published Company SWOT report which may contain information helpful for your Operations Management report. See instructions here: http://chat.library.berkeleycollege.edu/faq/70340

More Help Searching: Find 10K Report/Annual Report

You may also wish to find your company’s 10K report to find out information as it relates to supply chain or product design (or whatever your report topic may be).

See instructions here: http://chat.library.berkeleycollege.edu/faq/52238

Now try yourself

Once you've had a chance to review the presentation, please post to the discussion board your chosen company and operations management topic.

Using ABI INFORM/ PROQUEST (as demonstrated in this PowerPoint) find a recent article that relates to your company and research topic.

Post the citation for your article in APA Format and explain how the information found in the article will be helpful for your final paper.

You now have a source you can use for your final paper!

Citing in APA Format

APA stands for the American Psychological Association and the guidelines that they develop for formatting and citing sources in research papers are required in many college level classes that deal with areas of Business, Criminal Justice and Education:
