Introduction

Of all the functions involved in management, planning is the most important. As the old saying goes, “Failing to plan is planning to fail”. Setting your three objectives is the next critical step in the planning process. While setting your three work objectives you will need to determine the measurable, desirable and achievable outcomes. SMART slides will be used to formulate your Objectives.

Secure your Professor, and ISS approval of your Internship Work Objectives. The setting of your objective requires set your performance measures. Your Objectives MUST be quantifiable.

What is meant by quantifiable…you must be able to measure completion of each objective:

In the form of at least one tracked quantifiable outcome measure.

Present that your outcome measures in both words and graphic format.

YES or NO that the objective is met…DOES NOT qualify as complete objective.

Use MEASURABLE data to prove each objective completion (updated weekly and quantifiably demonstrated in annexes as required during the course.

When developing your ISS presentation…bear in mind that it is YOUR presentation and you must present to your ISS. Make sure you have all the relevant components.

Submit your draft ISS presentation in Phase 1A for Instructor’s comments and approval…you be will continuously work with your ISS throughout Lesson Zero Phases 1A and 2B to develop your objectives and quantifiable outcomes. Phase 1 may require several submissions…GET AN EARLY START.

Submit your completed (signed and initialed) ISS Presentation (single pdf document is fine) in Lesson Zero Phase 2B. Your single PDF must include 1) entire ISS presentation singed and initial, completed risk annexes, and any comments from your ISS.

INTERNSHIPS SPECIFIC (“S”) Objectives

When setting objectives MUST BE specific, ask yourself the following questions:

What am I going to do? Use action verbs such as develop, execute, conduct, build

Why is it important to do this?

Who is going to be involved in accomplishing the Objective?

When do I want this to be completed…state a timeline and completion date?

Objectives “SMART” SPECIFIC Objective Description
One Within the first two weeks, I will memorize the entire organizational structure and roles of all the stakeholders present at the organization, understand the mission statement and vision statement for the organization. This will help understand the superiors, peers, and subordinates within the organization. The organizational structure is a vital component to new interns and employees because it helps them learn stakeholder roles and the different departments within the organization and how they correlate.
Two Draw an organizational chart for the organization that will be used to assess hierarchy and company structure. Including phone numbers, names, and email address among other vital contact information will help improve the work directory and its distribution to employees. This kind of organizational chart helps organizational stakeholders look-up the organizational structure and get in touch with the relevant individuals through the contact details provided. It also helps in identifying a stakeholder’s superior to file positive reports or complaints regarding that stakeholder.
Three Develop open communication with organizational stakeholders to develop a deeper understanding of their positions and roles. This will be achieved through; involving with the stakeholders at a personal level, establishing communication objectives, speaking the stakeholders language, learning to be on the map and available, learning to listen, and being transparent. Developing effective communication with stakeholders will help ensure they receive information that builds positive attitudes within the company and is also relevant to their needs.

Internship MEASURABLE (“M”) Objectives

When setting objectives that are measurable, ask:

What measurements will be used?

State measurement methodology for each objective

State unit of measurement for each objective

Objectives “SMART” MEASURABLE Objective Discussion
One By the end of the first month, I will easily identify 3 career paths in this field and identify ways to learn about each career journey. This will be achieved through identifying my career preferences, core values, the activities that I enjoy doing both professionally and during my free time, identifying personal interests, identifying aptitudes and strengths, identifying hard skills and soft skills, and identifying the areas of specialization.
Two Outline my career goals. Develop a 5 year and 10 year career plan. This will be achieved through establishing milestones for my career. This will include benchmarking on other successful people who have undertaken the same career path and taking note of the job titles they have. This will also include identifying what advancements/titles I want to achieve along my career path and researching on how to achieve these goals. Incorporating training programs and taking on specific responsibilities will also help me achieve the long-term career plan.
Three Discover my personality traits. This will include focusing on my responses to various situations and how I naturally gravitate towards identifying suitable solutions to the problems I encounter. Review prior experience will help improve my skillset and streamline my training programs. Assessing my skillset is crucial to the achievement of the outlined career plan.

Internship ACHEIVABLE (“A”) Objectives

When setting objectives that are ACHIEVABLE, ask:

Is each of your objectives ACHEIVABLE?

Is there sufficient TIME at your Internship site?

Does your ISS agree?

Can you complete each objective on a timetable ending at the end of the TERM?

Objectives “SMART” ACHIEVABLE Objective Discussion
One By the end of my internship, I will have identified 5 potential solutions to an issue that is detrimental to the organization. Developing hypotheses about the problem and how the problem affects the organization. Identify the crucial hypotheses that should be tested first before conducting the actual test. The problem will be identified by focusing on organizational issues like absence of clear direction, poor communication, lack of awareness, and failure to develop key behaviors and competencies.
Three Identify core values will be achieved by writing down personal values, considering my mentors and people with admirable traits, considering my lived experiences, categorizing values into related groups, identifying a central theme, and choosing the top core values that will guide my along my career path.

Do I need to rearrange my priorities to accomplish?

Is it possible to complete this objective?

Objectives “SMART” REALISTIC Objective Description
One Incorporate shared understanding and shared meaning with stakeholders. This process will involve making a plan, defining stakeholder list and identifying the relevant stakeholders for the job, defining key stakeholders, tailoring the message and communication, be inclusive to all stakeholders, communicate clearly, listen, and respond quickly and conduct follow-ups.
Two Identify the issues within the organization using concise and clear articulations. Comprehend stakeholder interests which is facilitated by prioritizing stakeholder requirements, be sure that stakeholder requirements are met in the objectives, resolving possible conflicts between the identified stakeholder requirements, letting customer requirements take precedence, and asking management for support where applicable. Develop a list of possible solutions will allow for the achievement and alignment of stakeholder objectives and interests. Evaluate the solutions identified to ensure they meet objectives.
Three Conduct feasibility study which helps answer whether the proposed solutions should be pursued or not. This will help determine whether the solutions are aligned to the business requirements of the organization. The feasibility study will help identify any strengths and weaknesses of the proposed solutions. Select the most favorable solutions after conducting the feasibility study. Document agreements for future references and resolution. Identify and agree on contingency, monitoring, and evaluation
