NAME is a Professor at California State University San Marcos. NAME teaches graduate level ecology, does research, and mentors students. Alongside NAME’s work for California State University San Marcos, NAME also works for the Federal University of Mato Grosso and the University of Cuiaba in Brazil. NAME travels to Brazil at least two times per year, and sometimes stays there for months a time. Brazil’s culture is different from the United States of America because Brazil is a high-context and polychronic culture. Some cultural and communication barriers that NAME has noticed are that Brazilians have a very flexible time schedule, which leads to leaving late for work activities and work meetings take a longer time than needed, and the collectivist nature of the Brazilian culture. While NAME is frustrated with the flexibility with time that the Brazilians possess, NAME enjoys the collectivist culture that the Brazilians have.

Expat Profile Abstract-Robert Herjavec

• Robert Herjavec is a successful tech leader and entrepreneur that is originally from

Croatia that found success when min and his family escaped a communist jail. He is a

perfect example of an expatriate that found success in a foreign country

• Despite the many hardships and new environment that Rover Herjavec experienced, such

as his discovery of different social statuses, his perseverance and sense of curiosity for

new opportunities led him to great success. The drastic difference between the cultures of

Croatia and North America showed Robert that opportunity can be made anywhere. The

spirit of entrepreneurship and creating value can be credited to Robert Herjavec as he

continues to inspire people across the world.

Expat Profile Paper Abstract

I chose to do my expat profile paper on Robert Herjavec, CEO of The Herjavec Group

(one of Canada's fastest-growing technology companies and the country's largest information

technology security provider) and founder of BRAK Systems, which is a Canadian integrator of

internet security software. Originally from Croatia, he mentions that, due to speaking no English

when he first arrived, the transition between countries was difficult, experiencing culture shock

at the disparity in wealth between Canada and Croatia. In the fields of uncertainty avoidance and

individualism, Canada and Croatia have very different results. Canada is one of the most

individualistic countries in the world, as well as having an extremely low uncertainty avoidance

score, which is extremely different from that of his home country.

(Due to Herjavec’s public presence in the United States, I chose to compare Croatia and

the United States. However, since his business interests are in Canada, in the comparisons I made

to Croatia with the United States in my expat profile paper, Canada can easily be substituted for

the United States with very similar results)

• An expatriate is a migrant worker who is a specialist or skilled worker in his or her

occupation. (Kagan, 2020).

• “NAME” was born in Beirut, Lebanon raised in Lebanese culture. Lebanese culture is

really modern and close to many Southern European cultures like France and Italy, and

the country is ideologically and culturally related to Europe.

• From 2009-present day, “NAME” has been growing his multi-national corporation in

California and is the CEO and Chairman of his company, EndlessOne Global, and he is

in 67 countries and growing.

• “NAME” has been to China, Dubai, Mexico, and Pakistan for business in his corporation.

• “NAME” only meets with government executives when he travels internationally to

conduct business, and most foreign governments have an understanding of the American

culture of doing business. (Pakistan and UAE).

• Pakistan and UAE are similar to business in America, but China was the most different.

• “NAME” had a translator in every meeting in China, so meetings were slowed paced.

Chinese also take multiple meetings before signing a contract so patience is key.

• EndlessOne Global now is growing more worldwide and with its partners and multiple

business contracts, “NAME” is on the route to success in global business.

Jane Doe is a native Chilean who was born and raised in Santiago, Chile and has lived in Spain and now currently lives in Dublin, Ireland for the last twelve years. After having lived in Spain for two years she got her Spanish citizenship and decided to get a degree in teaching. Once getting her teaching degree she moved to Ireland, where she worked for a multinational pharmaceutical company for the first couple of years. She later founded her primarily online business called By the Way Language, where she teaches people from all backgrounds on how to effectively speak Spanish in order to communicate with Spanish speakers. Having lived in Spain and being Chilean herself, she utilizes her personal life experiences in helping other learn the Spanish language. She’s happy being self-employed where she’s able to set her own hours and schedule and loves living in beautiful Ireland.

Abstract

XXXX is an expatriate working in Bahrain as a senior manager for a multi-national corporation.

As a female in a predominately Muslim country, XXXX was introduced to a wide range of

challenges that constantly undermined her values, both personally and professionally. XXXX has

several noteworthy accomplishments that have solidified much of her success. She graduated top

of her class at a younger age than her peers and eagerly entered the corporate world fast. She

started working in the banking industry, where she quickly found success. After her husband was

offered a position in an affiliate bank located in Bahrain, XXXX decided to follow suit. She

found herself as an expatriate working and living in Bahrain. While in Bahrain, she quickly

recognized the cultural difference in that country, especially when dealing with gender-related

customs. Chief among her challenges are the gender inequalities that exist in the Muslim culture.

Learning to navigate gender inequalities meant that she was at odds with her values and morals.

Expat Profile Paper Abstract (Summary)

This paper reviews a successful surf shop owner from the United States who created surf shops in the Sao Paolo area of Brazil. He talks about the culture shock he had when he moved to Brazil as an 11-year-old with his parents and the reverse culture shock when he returned to the United States to complete college in Massachusetts. He details the original struggles of originally moving to Brazil, the depression he went through, and how a friend inviting him to go surfing one day changed his opinion on Brazil and made him fall in love with the culture. He details how after being in both cultures that the Brazilian culture was more appealing to him and loved the warmth of the people compared to the United States as one of his biggest factors for moving to Brazil.

Expat Summary X came from very small beginnings and grew up in a village in Turkey. After X had

graduated from university, they decided that they wanted to pursue a career abroad in the United

States. Coming from a predominately collectivist and high-context culture it was a very surreal

experience for them to see just how different the culture was. X felt that culture in the United

States was much more individualistic; with people keeping to themselves much more than what

they experienced in their home country. X said that the culture gave them a sense of loneliness

that they had never felt before in their home country. They felt that people were much more

independent here as well. I believe that X was feeling the culture shock of going from a fairly

collectivist society to an individualistic one.

He represents for XXX USA LLC, whose parent company XXX Consulting - Trading – Service Real Estate Corporation is headquartered in Ho Chi Minh City and one of the largest social housing developers in southern Vietnam, as a director and managing member. P.T’s home country is Vietnam, and its primary cultural orientations are all different from the United States on business and management context, including power distance, individualism or collectivism, and high or low context. Obviously, he hails from a primarily collectivist country but resides in a primarily individualist country. Vietnamese people perform much higher power distance than the Americans. The country is considered a very high-context culture while United States is low-context culture. P.T has experienced the culture shock progress when he first came to work and live in America, including honeymoon, irritation and hostility, gradual adjustment, and biculturalism. He also thinks of preparing himself mentally before going home for the reverse culture shock.

While interviewing my family friend who currently lives in New Zealand and grew up in The United Kingdom, I got to know the country more. Her company is a medical recruiting company. They recruit doctors and medical professionals from all over the world. She stated that she did not like doing business with The USA because of our health system, our doctors’ knowledge, and the cooperate aspect. Overall I found is very informing.

• John Doe emigrated from South Korea to the United States in 2010, at the age of 22.

• He came to help his uncle out at their family business on his mother’s side of the family,

a retail chain that sells Japanese pop culture merchandise.

• His grandmother and other family members, including his uncle, had previously

emigrated to the United States, and started up this business.

• John learned the ropes of running a business while learning English at the same time,

before turning around and opening his own store, a franchise of his family business.

• John had to deal with many language barriers in both English and Japanese, while also

getting used to the general culture in the United States.

• Though he was prepared to be open-minded, there were many cultural differences

between the mostly homogeneous country he came from, and the very diverse country he

came to.

• Despite having to overcome both language and cultural barriers, today he owns three

stores, and has been very successful.

From the moment Prabal Datta graduated from the college in his home country India, he obtained a position at the largest IT company in India. Since then he has become managing director and center head for the company’s Hungary location. Challenges arise as technology changes and the ability to implement those changes is Hungary. However, coming from a collectivism culture in India, to the individualist culture of Hungary, Datta continues his journey of growth, education and fully engaging in his new environment.

Expat Profile Summary My expat profile paper compared and contrasted the countries of South Korea and the United States. I used the Hofstede-insight website to compare the two culture and focused on their main differences. Carlos Asuaje was a former major league baseball player for the San Diego Padres who was traded to the Texas Rangers and sold to the Lotte Giants of the Korean Baseball Organization. He documented his daily life in South Korea through various YouTube videos and through his personal Twitter account. He would tweet out things he found interesting about South Korea and vlog about his day-to-day activities in his YouTube videos. The differences between the two countries are vast and moving from one country to another to continue ones career is a job of its own. South Korea is considered a collectivist country while the United States is an individualist country, thus making Carlos the prime candidate for my paper.

EXPAT PROFILE PAPER: ABSTRACT

My expat paper is about a Somalian woman that crossed countries to find her herself,

and the home where she felt she could fit her creativity in. She is a stylist, born and raised in

Hergisa, Somalia. She and her family had been victims to the civil war, and were one of the

fortunate ones that had the opportunity to move to Malmö, Sweden to avoid the war as

refugees. She later moved to London to pursue her dreams of being a stylist and a model.

After figuring out that modeling was not for her she decided to move to Oslo, Norway where

she became a stylist for an international artist. She is a dedicated lady that is known as an

inspiration in the fashion industry in Norway, but this was not enough to fulfil her dreams so

she decided to move to Los Angeles. Her cultural challenges have brought her to where she is

today, and because of her dedication she is now one of the most iconic stylist.

The expat that I wrote my paper on was about “NAME” who traveled from San Francisco

to Wellington, New Zealand. Her life experience of visiting other countries around the world

helped her gain enough experience to successfully life in a foreign country without feeling away

from home. With the successful startup of her business Loomio she was able to prove many

critics wrong and showed how she was smart enough traverse this hard path. The differences of

businesses from these countries will prove to many how being an expat it hard. Overall, New

Zealand’s culture and America’s culture are not that far off from each other but just lack a few

key differences that could be hard work with in the long run.

The famous expatriate and A-List Hollywood Star, Salma Hayek Jiménez, was born on

September 2, 1966, in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, Mexico, to a Spanish mother and Lebanese

father. Some of us have seen her as "Frida Khalo'' in the romance film "Frida" that came out in

2002, or "Carolina" in the movie "Desperado" that aired in 1995. Salma became a successful

public figure by the time she was 23, here in the United States and Mexico. Salma struggled with

discrimination, physical, and mental abuse throughout her career as a Mexican and Lebanese

woman. The changes that Salma went through were an effect of switching from a collectivist

culture, in Mexico, to an individualistic culture, here in the United States.

Expat Profile Paper Abstract (Summary)

In this paper I wanted to reflect the positive and negative aspects of expat through an

interview conducted by Larryssa De Garcia in Spain. In the interview I was able to gather a lot of

information that reflected the experience of the interviewee. I decided to write about this

interview because David has traveled around the world thanks to many job opportunities and

wanted to reflect how cross-cultural communication problems affect the person seeking

employment outside his country. I also wanted to talk about other issues that can affect such as

climate, culture, etc. At the beginning and end of the paper I cover these topics based on the

experience that David offered during his interview.

Abstract This paper will review the expat life of Wu Lei a soccer player that originated from Nanjing, Jiangsu china. That paper will discussion various issues that Wu Lei went through when going to play for Espanyol, a team from Spain that is in a higher-ranking league than the team that Wu Lei was originally from. This paper will go into further detail and some of the cultural difference that Lu Wei experienced with the team and some of the norms that he had to adapt to in order to make it in this team. Overall the paper will explain Wu Lei overall experience as an expat and how he handled these hurdles.

Kelly Morita is a well-educated young American from a small town in Michigan, looking

to make a difference in the world. Ms. Morita has a degree in the Japanese Language and teaches

Tuesday through Saturday. As a side business Kelly runs her own self-promoting website

containing life-changing and mentorship programs for those learning about themselves while in a

foreign country. Kelly has displayed her life unedited, about what it takes to be an American

The expatriate that I have chosen to profile just so happens to be my grandmother. I had

the ability to easily get in contact with her to conduct a small interview and also was able to

catch up with her as well. (XXX) was born in Bogota, Colombia. While raising six children, (X)

was a licensed accountant at Banco Popular in Bogota. Banco Popular offers corporate and

personal banking. Its products and services include insurance, foriegn trade, checking and

savings accounts, as well as credit lines and mortgages. Within her job as an accountant, she

would work with a large accounting team to complete projects such as financial analysis and

general accounting. However, once the opportunity arose, (X) took the first opportunity that she

could in the U.S. to create a better life for her and her children. The job that she had been able to

acquire in the U.S. would end up being a managerial role within Sky Chef American Airlines.

The business culture would completely change for this woman and she has done nothing but

persevere and adapt in order to be successful.

Expat Profile Paper Abstract

I wrote my expat paper on Karl Lagerfeld. Karl Lagerfeld was the creative director for

Chanel and Fendi. Karl was from Germany but moved to France, where he stayed until he sadly

passed. Germany and France are both individualistic countries (Germany 67/France 71) but

where they differed greatly was power distance with Germany ranking 35 and France 68. A big

cross-culture communication issue that Karl found himself in was when he created a fashion line

for Chanel that had sacred texts from the Qur’an, the sacred religious text of Islam, written on a

dress. This caused a big uproar from the Muslim community that Karl and Chanel had to come

out and apologize for as Karl thought the text had came from a love poem about the Taj Mahal.

Karl and Chanel destroyed the dresses and restored their relationship with the Muslim

community of Paris.

David Beckham, a world-renowned professional soccer player, father, husband, businessman. He

was originally from London and traveled to the United States. Prior to being traded to the LA

Galaxy in 2007 Beckham traveled the world paying for numerous different teams. It wasn’t until

2013 when he retired that David Beckham decided to move him and his family back to London.

Then about 2018 that the family officially sold their Beverly Hills home in California and began

looking at homes in Miami Florida to get closer to the new soccer team that David Beckham

decided to create. The team is expected to play their first professional league game in 2020, as

David Beckham being their manager. Also, during this time Beckham has a branding company

that works with Adidas and other major companies in the United States.

Expat Profile Paper Abstract

The expat profile paper was done on Andrew Wiggins who is a 25-year-old Canadian

professional NBA player from Toronto, Canada. Wiggins played basketball for the Kansas

Jayhawks up until he was drafted with the first overall NBA draft pick in 2014 by the Cleveland

Cavaliers. This made him the second Canadian to be drafted number one overall. During his first

season, Wiggins went on to earn NBA Rookie of the Year for the 2014-2015 season. Within the

first few years of his NBA career, Wiggins began experiencing some trouble due to the change

within the organization that caused him to not play as well and started receiving criticism about

his plays. He explained the reasoning as to why he thinks he wasn’t playing well in a press

conference but continued to work hard and push through the season. In early 2020, he then got

traded to the Golden State Warriors.

● People in the U.S., the way people communicate in business is alot more direct and to -the-point whereas in MX have indirect communication.

The Queen was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and then later moved to Wassenaar, in

the Netherlands. The queen joined university and graduated from the Pontifical Catholic

University of Argentina with a degree in economics. She was married. She can speak Dutch,

Spanish, and English. She is also fluent in conversational French. She was designated the UN

Secretary-General's Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance. She experienced the challenge of

Cross-cultural interactions such as stress and culture shock because moving to a native country.

She was capable of undertaking tasks assigned to her. Her experience improved her performance

at her workplace. She was also able to learn the culture of the native country thus fueling her

Expat Paper Abstract

Sunjar Pichai was born in India to hard-working parents in the technology field. Due to

his upbringing, he expressed interest in technology and attended the Indian Institute of

Technology and received a degree. He came to America at the age of 21 and got his Master’s

degree from Stanford and his MBA from the Wharton School of Business at the University

Pennsylvania. When he first came to the United States, he experienced culture shock due to the

differences in prices and abundance of technological resources. He didn’t know what the internet

was when he got here and had to learn without any prior knowledge. He started working at

Google in 2004, developing Google Chrome and Google Drive. He received constant promotions

and ultimately was put in charge of Android. In 2015, he became the CEO of Google at just 43

years old after just 11 years.

Abstract

Having to adapt to a new culture, people, language, and customs can be difficult for

everyone. Raul Jimenez, a Mexican Footballer that plays for Wolverhampton Wanderers in

England, has adjusted quite well to his host country after having been living there for two years.

England is quite the opposite of Mexico. Of course, he has his teammates to thank for the

guidance and support they have given him. He has had to accustom to England culture and the

leagues playing style that consist of a physical, fast-paced football style, and the English league

is known to be a tough. He has made an enormous impact on the club and has become a fan.

Cuban baseball player Yasiel Puig might not have been the first Major League Baseball player to

defect from his home country to pursue his dream of playing baseball, but his journey was as turbulent,

and adversity filled as imaginable. His natural given athletic talents which made him stand out even

among an environment where literally everyone is trying to achieve the same goal, were primed to be

wasted by playing for virtually no pay for Cuba’s baseball league. After approximately 13 failed attempts

to defect to Mexico for the opportunity to play in the Major Leagues, Puig finally succeeded through a

variety of illegal, crime filled methods and individuals. Upon successfully defecting to the United States

he endured many cross-cultural communication issues and racked up off the field controversies as well

as on-field skirmishes. Despite these struggles he achieved literally infinitely more success than possible

in his communist home country in Cuba and helped breathe life into a stagnant franchise in the Los

Angeles Dodgers. He continues to be a productive MLB player to this day and shows gratitude to all the

United States has given him.

Rachel Weiss is an ESL expatriate that moved to China from Houston, Texas when she graduated college at 22. Blogging her experiences in China for five years, changing her job to digital media at a company in Beijing called Career China, and traveling, she shares how she will spend a few more years before returning to the states. Moving from an individualist culture to a collectivist culture, Rachel was shocked by hospitable and helpful strangers were on the streets, in homes, etc. Living in both small cities and big cities, Rachel shares that for other expatriates, living in the bigger cities might be easier for adapting, unlike her experience. Living in three cities in China, she had to adapt to each of the micro-cultures she entered into. Culture shock for her was strangers taking pictures of her, the initial language barriers, and squatty potties.

An expatriate is someone that works and lives outside their native country. Difficulties

encountered include culture shock, language barriers, family stress or re-entry shock after

returning home. The expatriate I interviewed was in American and retired Marine that worked in

Baghdad for 18 months during the Iraq war.

Iraq is a collectivistic society that scores high in Power Distance. He found the Iraqi

people to be respectful of each other and oriented around family and tribe. They are friendly and

want to have safety and security for their families.

After his assignment was complete, he had trouble adjusting to normal life. The

experience that he described is common amongst repatriates. They suffer from reverse culture

shock and have difficulty reintegrating into society. Addressing this challenge is critical to the

future success of the individual and retention of the employee by the organization.

My expat profile paper was written about Calvin Nguyen, a 54 year old software engineer

at Qualcomm, who was born and raised in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. Vietnam is a communist and

socialist country where the people live by harsh rules and are separated by a societal hierarchy.

Because of the culture, Vietnamese people are given a stricter way of communication. Calvin

puts it as “twisting your tongue ten times before speaking”. This meant the Vietnamese chose

their words carefully. In a business standpoint, the Vietnamese value relationships and strive to

establish mutual respect. They also refer to each other as if there was already an established

Expat Abstract

XXX is an expatriate from the Netherlands living in Japan. This profile paper details

some of the cultural factors from both the Netherlands as well as Japan. Later paragraphs detail

some of the trials that XXX had to go through in order to find success in this foreign country.

Issues such as economy, transportation, networking, language and writing, and management

styles are touched on. Background on XXX leading up to XXX departure from his home country

and the factors that contribute to this as well as some of the cultural scales on the Hofstede

insights webpage are also incorporated toward the end of the profile paper.

This paper explores the details of travel covered from Maria Stipp who is cited as a phenomenal business leader by many industry leaders as well as an avid traveller who regularly clocks over 100,000 airline miles per year doing business across the globe. Her expansions and globalization of firms has led to numerous success stories in consumer staple and entertainment industries by relocating corporate assets to the most profitable locations through lucrative and enriching business opportunities. In the paper, it is cited that during her travels she has many notes on specifically what women should do while traveling and how to properly prepare for potentially harmful environments which is critical to many young women who are preparing for global business travel and management.

Expat Summary

Mark Wilson (Alias) is an expatriate who has lacked the experience of leading a

company in a different country. Wilson is a 35-year-old white American expatriate with

three kids living in the suburbs of Pennsylvania. His wife, a homeschool teacher, is the

one staying at home and taking care of the day-to-day activities. Wilson has never been to

China, let alone taken any Chinese language courses. He is in charge of managing a

company called ParPro and their production line in Beijing, China. The company

provides consignment and full turnkey manufacturing services for custom PCBA, cable

assembly, and system integration. Although Wilson never had the previous experience,

he knew he had to learn and adapt to a new form of leadership in a collectivist country to

expand their manufacturing overseas.

Indra Nooyi is an Indian-American business executive as well as the former chairman and CEO of PepsiCo. She was born in Chennai, India, in 1955 and lived there until 1978. She grew in a conservative middle-class Indian family in a time in which women were expected to be house caretakers and obedient wives and mothers. However, Indra denied these norms in numerous ways: joining an all-girl rock band and playing on a women’s cricket team. She aspired to be more than what society enforced and applied and was accepted to Yale University in 1978. Much to her surprise, her parents allowed her to immigrate to the U.S despite the consequence that this action would make her an unmarriageable commodity. In the U.S, she faced multiple cultural shocks, including a change in the picturesque view of society (the U.S being a manicured society), direct and open contact and communication with all people despite their gender and if they were a stranger or not, the dismemberment of a hierarchical work system, and the opportunity and encouragement of professional success of women.

Arnold Schwarzenegger was born in Austria, a neighboring country to Germany.

People there were usually pressured by their parents to follow a specific career.

Generally it is whatever the parents did. Arnold did not want to do this, however. He

wanted to pursue a career in show business. He has a challenging relationship with his

dad as his dad would often beat him. The physical abuse combined with cultural

pressure led Arnold to pursue some sort of escape. He saw a magazine with the winner

of the Mr. Universe competition on it and a story about how that winner used his fame

to get roles in movies. Arnold thought he would be able to replicate this success and

have his own leading roles in American show business. as most of us now know, he did

achieve his goal.

Expatriate Profile Abstract

The expatriate profiled was born in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. In

1968 he migrated to the Central Valley of California with his wife and three children.

Some key differences between Portugal and the United States that affected this

expatriate’s adjustment to American culture are primarily in the Individualism and

Uncertainty Avoidance dimensions of Hofsted’s Insights.

Portugal has an Individualism score of 27, making them fairly collectivist as a

culture, whereas the US is quite on the contrary with a score of 91. In terms of

Uncertainty Avoidance, Portugal rates very high at 99. Many Americans did not

understand many of this expatriate’s concerns, since the US is far more comfortable

with uncertainty, scoring a 46 in this dimension. This expatriate, who spoke little

English, did not receive much assistance when first settling in the US until they found a

local Portuguese community.

Expat Profile Abstract

Frank Peelen is a Dutch expatriate residing in the bustling city of Tokyo, Japan. An

ex-professional poker player turned entrepreneur, Frank found Japanese culture safe, interesting,

and a challenge to rise up to. Making a quick decision to move to Japan just weeks after visiting

for the first time, Frank immersed himself in Japanese society as much as he could; going to

gyms, interacting with locals, and starting his own business was his plan to assimilate. Although

learning the Japanese language posed a difficult task, Mr. Peelen rose to the occasion by not only

learning the language quickly on his own, but taking the plunge in founding a business he had

dreamed of creating. His business, Language Link, a language-learning mobile application, was

the first, but not the last business venture he has pursued since expatriating to Japan.

The expat that was reviewed for this paper was Alex Gervais, whose blog was found on: https://www.bootsnall.com/articles/15-of-the-best-expat-blogs.html His blog page led me to his company pages all of which he co founded while living in Tokyo Japan. He co-founded 3 separate marketing and optimization companies, which means there was a lot of hurdles for him to overcome in Japan. The paper will review the cultural differences that exist between Canada and Japan, using Hofstede's dimensions website. In addition the specific issues Alex faced while in Tokyo, that can be explored via company descriptions and his linkedin page. In addition there will be a part of the paper dedicated to the issue of Repatriation, since Alex currently in the midst of moving back to Canada.

Expatriate Profile Summary

The expatriate that I chose to profile was born in Melbourne, Australia, and decided to

move to China and open a chain of restaurants. China and Australia have many cultural

differences including where they fall on the spectrum between collectivism and individualism.

Australia is a much more individualist country where self-sufficiency is valued and China is

highly collectivist where they consider the interests of the group to be most important. The main

challenges for the expatriate involved navigating through this new culture that was different from

their own all while having no major connections and not speaking the native language. This

person was ultimately very successful in their venture and a major reason why was their

commitment to their employees and the community. This type of corporate social responsibility

appealed to their desire to belong to “in-groups” that take care of them in exchange for loyalty.

Expat Profile Paper Abstract

Individuals who leave their native country to live or work in a new country are called

expatriates. It is crucial for them to realize the differences in cultures and learn how they

function. Without this information and knowledge, success is more difficult to obtain and may

even be impossible. David Henderson-Stewart is an expatriate from the United Kingdom who

relocated to Russia to start a watch company. With the knowledge of Russia that had been

acquired from his Russian grandmother, David was able to view the differences in cultures and

successfully start a business in a country that he had never resided in. Moving from a

individualistic country to a collectivist country brought challenges but David was able to see the

differences and work through them. This company has continued in Russia and flourished due to

his knowledge of culture differences.

Ekaterina Popova is a 27 year old entrepreneur that moved from Russia to Finland at a very young age. She was only 18 when she decided to get a higher education in a different country. She learned a different language and struggled through the challenges of communication, culture, and earning a visa. Once she finished receiving her Bachelor’s Degree in International Business she took the big leap to move to London to start her business, InspoHub. She wanted to create a company that could help small businesses. InspoHub builds and executes digital marketing strategies to benefit and help grow small businesses. As any new company, she struggled with finding clients and finding her niche within the culture. Through this expat journey she has learned how to become more independent and stay focused on how to make her dreams come true.

Nellie Huang is an expedite that resides in Granada, Spain. She and her husband traded in

their corporate lifestyle in the U.S. to travel the world and start her blog, WildJunket. Nellie has

traveled to over 130 amazing countries but had chosen to raise her family in Granada. With

starting her blog and building a brand in a foreign country, inevitably she has run into many

difficulties involving communication between different cultures. She had to adjust to Spain’s laid

back mentality and motto to work to live, instead of living to work. Nellie has also attempted to

learn Spanish, however, she continues to experience a language barrier daily. She has been

exposed to hundreds of cultures and unfortunately, the people of Granada are not well cultured.

This has caused a divide between her and the people in Granada. But, the managerial and

communication skills she has obtained through running a brand while living in a foreign country

are unparalleled.

The expatriate that I chose is Zlatan Ibrahimović, a swedish soccer player. He is 39 years

old, his position is a striker, and he is six feet five inches. Players are usually retired by that age

but he is still playing and is still doing very good. He is one of the most popular players in the

world and very successful. He currently plays with AC Milan and has played with other big

clubs like FC Barcelona, Ajax, Paris Saint-Germain F.C. and Manchester United, just to name a

few. These are all very popular and well known football clubs in the world. He has been very

successful in all of these clubs and people still want to see him play. Before his move to AC

Milan, Zlatan went to the United States to play in the MLS for the LA Galaxy. Even though he

was only there for two seasons, he conquered a lot. He played 56 games in his two seasons with

the Galaxy and scored 53 goals. His first goal in his first game with the Galaxy was amazing. It

was scored almost from half of the field. You can find it on YouTube, it is awesome, as most of

his goals are. This paper will talk about the difference between playing in the MLS versus other

leagues in Europe. In addition, it will mention what Zlatan thinks of LA Galaxy and his

experience there as opposed to his experience playing in Europe.

Summary

My expat profile is my girlfriend's father who was an immigrant from Hungary. His work

experiences when he came here were degrading and didn’t meet his expectations. Cultural

differences portrayed a different view for both sides, however Rajumd decided to break down the

barriers by taking matters into his own hands. Creating his own company helped present himself

in a better way than an employee and more of a manager. This way he was able to communicate

with customers in a way that benefited him and his new company. Cultural barriers still have the

potential to be present, however his opportunity to break down that barrier has a higher rate of

success. His transition into the United States work environment motivated him to pursue

something greater and his story should be told as it is still possible to have the American dream,

no matter how young people start.

Collin used to work in retail banking as a Senior vice president. Collin was one who made the income while her husband at that time was just a house husband. Collin decided to make a resort because she wanted to get away from the “America corporate” industry. Based on the blogs that she has posted it looks like she like to keep her life private and focus on Fiji and the resort, Collin retired before the age of 56 and was able to fulfill her dream and now is running a resort away from the United States without her husband.

Expat Profile Paper Abstract: Yumcha Mama

The blogger for The Yumcha Mama was the expatriate I chose to profile. She is

originally from Australia (Individualist Country) and moved to Singapore (a Collectivist

Country). She first worked as an English teacher and later got a job in banking all while she ran a

social networking website. She had a difficult time dealing with the competitive business

atmosphere in Singapore, and the slow pace of making personal friends. She chose to give up her

website after getting into a romantic relationship and getting married. However, she later started

blogging about Singapore and her life experiences going by the name of The Yumcha Mama.

The expat who I decided to write this paper about is the legendary lead vocalist of the band

‘Queen’, Freddie Mercury. Freddie Mercury was originally born in Tanzania in 1946 into a Parsi

family. At the age of 18, Mercury and his family fled Tanzania from the revolution in order to

protect themselves and avoid the famine of the revolution. He and his family fled a country

(Tanzania) which was low in the individualism dimension and went to the United Kingdom

which ranks high in individualism. This allowed Mercury to focus on himself and grow his

artistry without feeling held back by the traditions he had grown up with when he was coming up

with his family. Mercury saw an opportunity to join Brian May, and Roger Taylor’s band and

that is when his career lifted off. His journey as Queen’s vocalist led him to worldwide fame and

success and he is now known as one of the most influential artists in music history and remains

one of the most iconic expats in history.

● Lionel Messi is one of the most popular soccer players in the world, playing for one of

the most prestigious soccer clubs in Europe.

● Lionel Messi is a well-known expatriate who was born and raised in Santa Fe, Argentina

and at the age of 13 moved to Spain for work purposes.

● At the age of 13, Messi was offered the opportunity to move to Spain to join FC

Barcelona, and have his medical bills paid by them.

● Argentina is a mix of European traditions and Latin American and indigenous customs.

Argentines are very pleased with their country and its mixed legacy just as their capacity

to transcend difficulty.

● Argentina is one of the most individualists of all Latin countries, due to migration waves

and the early emergence of the middle class.

● In Spain, it is normal to shake hands when being introduced. When talking business it is

often formal and filled with strict rules of protocol. In Spain, arguing is not acceptable

and should be avoided at all times.

● Spain on the other hand is a collectivist country compared to the other European

Nathaniel Pajarillo is a United States Naval veteran and businessman located here in

North County San Diego specializing in shipping and outsourcing. He originally is from the

Philippines and traveled to find a new life in the United States in his later teenage years. He

enlisted in the United States Navy and served for 20 years before rooting himself in North

County San Diego and building his small veteran owned business. His childhood and younger

life were centralized around a collectivist mindset where family and the group came first. When

he came to the United States, he discovered a more independent approach to life through the

Navy. Although he has spent most of his life in the United States, he takes pride and honor in his

Filipino upbringings centralized around family. While maintaining great love for the

independence and autonomy that the United States has given him.

I had the privilege of interviewing NAME, a close family friend who moved to the

United States five years ago from Brazil. Coming to a new country with no family, not speaking

the native language and no money was a very hard decision for him to make. He came in search

of a better lifestyle and to offer a better future for his children. For many months he struggled to

be financially stable as there were no jobs available considering the circumstances he was going

through. He soon began a car detailing business where he offered his services to people at their

homes. Many obstacles came his way as he did not speak English very well and communicating

with customers was difficult. In addition, he came to realize how individualistic Americans are,

and not the type to build long-term relationships. For instance, back in Brazil he had a successful

car detailing business and he was able to keep it that way by having regular customers whom he

had built a relationship with and whom he ultimately saw as friends rather than customers. He

wanted to build trust with customers here in the U.S but most of them wanted the services and

nothing else. This came to be because of the fast-paced Americans living here in the U.S.

Milena Markovna Kunis, also known as Mila Kunis, is an American actress from

Chernivtsi, Ukraine who came to the United States at the age of 7 without knowing anything

about the American culture or speak English. Mila along with her parents, brother, and

grandmother left Soviet Ukraine to have a better future. As an expat, Mila suffered from cultural

shock when migrating from a collectivism country to a primary individualism country. Mila has

debuted in many American TV shows and movies, such as “That ‘70s Show,” “Family Guy,”

“Black Swan,” “Ted,” and “Bad Moms.” Mila currently lives in Los Angles, California. She is

married to the America actor, Ashton Kutcher, and have two children.

Moving to a completely new country can be a life changing experience for anyone. It can be a

myriad of emotions from being excited all the way to being intimidated and scared. This was true

for Jane Doe who moved from Belgium all the way to South Korea. While it was full of fun and

new experiences, it was not without tribulations as the society is completely opposite of what she

is used to. Belgium is an individualistic society while South Korea is a collective society. It was

hard for Jane to adjust to this new environment, but she eventually prevails and is able to reflect

on those experiences positively.
