Prototyping

A prototype is a model used to test a concept. This step entails experimentation and learning by doing, and success shows a technology direction.

Piloting

Pilot production consists of the testing of the production process for the quality of the output and the efficiency of the chosen processes.

Pilot production occurs as firms attempt to replicate their prototype results and test the operability and marketability of their output.

test the product or service, often referred to as proof of concept, to see how well it can work,

develop relationships and deliver on promised outcomes,

consider additional features that should be added to the original product or service to optimize the solution for the customer, and

conduct a cost and value assessment of a particular product or service over the short and long term.

Scaling Production

Scaling production is the focus on increasing the quantity of a good produced in order to lower the per-unit costs, because fixed costs are shared over a larger number of products produced.

The scale of production is determined by combining understanding of production potential (the limits of the production techniques available) and the potential demand for production output.

Scaling production can take the form of batch or mass production. Batch production is when a product is created stage by stage over a series of workstations and different groups (or batches) of products are made. Mass production is when large amounts of standardized products are made in continuous fashion and often on assembly lines.

Defining Additive Manufacturing Industry

Additive manufacturing is the process of joining materials to make objects from 3D model data, usually layer upon layer that can be customized and flexibly designed and produced.

This industry includes 3D printers, scanners for scanning 3D images, software for manipulating 3D images, scaffolding for supporting printed objects, and materials including basic plastics and photosensitive resins, ceramics, cement, glass, numerous metals and metal alloys, and new thermoplastic composites infused with carbon nanotubes and fibers.

Market segments include aerospace, medical/dental, toys, automotive, electronics, clothing/shoes, etc.
