COURSE DESCRIPTION: MGMT 335 is a core class in the Management Concentration. Its purpose is to help students better understand the intersection between business, law and society. Your University Catalog tells you that there is a “role of business in alleviating society’s problems, and problems and issues of current concern….” In this regard, the course will have a special theme for the term[footnoteRef:1]--corporate social responsibility. If you have followed the recent scandals concerning lack of social responsibility in some business firms you realize that this is an area that you as a future strategic leader must take into account. We will also see how many corporations face up to their responsibilities to their extended organizational environments [1: Fulfills AACSB requirements for ethical reasoning.]
STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE: Each lesson in the course is designed to do the following: 1) Lecture/ Discussion/Analysis of the Chapter for the day; 2) Inquiry into a short case study; 3) Video and Dialog of a business leader discussing strategy on a topic relevant to the day. 4) Individual presentations of current business articles, and on final papers. 5) Group Presentations of Case Studies.
TEXTBOOK: Business & Society: Stakeholders, Ethics and Public Policy, 15/e by Anne T. Lawrence and James Weber, MGraw Hill Publishers (hard cover). A soft copy, cheaper, and shorter version of Business & Society: Stakeholders, Ethics and Public Policy, 15/e by Anne T. Lawrence and James Weber, has been created just for this class by McGraw Hill Publishers. This book will be in the CSUSB bookstore under the name Government Business Relations. It will cover only Chapters: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 15 = 12, plus relevant case studies.
WORKFOLDER: From time to time you will be asked to write a short class exercise on the topic of the day. Students will keep these exercises in a folder. Instructor will collect and review folders at the end of the term.
BLACKBOARD: Learning aids, such as Notes, Power-Point slides, and special readings are provided on Blackboard. Follow by Module #s as shown on the Calendar. Announcements will appear on Blackboard and via email. If you are not getting email, this indicates you are not on Blackboard, please let Instructor know.
CBPA & AACSB LEARNING COMPETENCIES:
· Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving for Business & Society
· Ethical Reasoning for business in a complex social environment
· Development of Communication Skills for Business & Society
· Ability to use Information Technology to Support Critical Thinking
· General & Specific Strategic Management Skills
PRME PHILOSOPHY: Our College has committed itself to the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) in conjunction with the U.N. Global Compact and many other Business Schools worldwide.
LECTURE & ANALYSES: The Instructor will present highlights of the Chapter assigned for the class day. Some times Powerpoint slides may be used to illustrate, at other times there will be discussions led by the Instructor from the podium. The Instructor will make Powerpoint slides available on Blackboard, but only after each lesson is discussed in the classroom. Each lesson will have an analyses component from the Opening and Closing Cases of the day’s Chapter.
VIDEOS: Most lessons showcase a short 5 minute video of a CEO explaining his/her corporate philosophies about Business & Society issues: e.g., Stakeholders, Corporate Social Responsibility[footnoteRef:2], Political Impacts on Businesses, Effective Corporate Governance, etc. Some videos will be longer, such as those on Corporate Social Responsibility and Ethical Values—which is a running theme throughout this course. You will pay attention and take notes. You may be asked to briefly discuss the highlights of the video and what you learned from watching it. [2: Fulfills AACSB requirements for ethical reasoning]
INDIVIDUAL BUSINESS ARTICLE PRESENTATIONS[footnoteRef:3]: You will be asked to present a business article related to the topics covered (or to be covered) in this class. You will present your article on the day assigned to your group. You will not present as a group. Members of the group will individually present their articles. All class members should be present for all presentations. [3: Fulfills AACSB requirements for individual oral communication. ]
Choose a business article from a leading business journal that relates to business and society. Presentations will be as follows: a) State your name, article and where you took it from at the beginning of your presentation. b) State the main ideas in the article. c) How does this article relate to what you have learned in this class or in other classes?. d) What is the main “take-away” from this article? d) Ten minutes maximum for each article. e) Be prepared to respond to questions from the class.
GROUP PRESENTATIONS (TEAMWORK)[footnoteRef:4]: This is a group presentation effort unlike the individual business article presentations, above. Group work is a way to share ideas and facilitate individual learning. There is growing recognition today of the need to master working in teams as the nature of work in a knowledge-based economy requires greater cooperation and coordination. [4: Fulfills AACSB requirements for group oral communication]
You will be assigned to a group. A case study will be assigned to the group, and each member will make a contribution to that case study. You will decide as a group what each person’s contribution will be. You will set up rules for meeting, You will meet early in the term, and will design your presentation, your use of power point or other method, and what props, if any, you will use. Practice your presentation before the due date, and do not read exclusively from notes: Each case study has a number of questions. a) Divide up the questions. b) present an oral synopsis for the case. c) Use powerpoints, props, or videos to illustrate. d) Fifteen minutes maximum for the whole group. e) Be prepared to respond to questions from the class. All class member should be present for all presentations.
FINAL PAPER ON BUSINESS & SOCIETY: In accordance with your learning in this class, you will write a paper on a Public Policy (law) and its impact upon a Corporation of your choice. As you have learned throughout this term, society, through its laws and policies changes how business is permitted to conduct itself, and business in turn impacts society. The purpose of this paper is to give you experience in writing a brief analysis of a law that impacts a business corporation. You can choose a law and a corporation with which you are familiar. For example, you might analyze The Sarbannes Oxley Act, 2002, or the Family and Medical Leave Act, 1993, Americans with Disabilities Act, or some other law, and show how this law has benefitted society, and what constraints it has put on an organization of your choice.
Use 12 point font. Double-space. One inch margins. Use APA, or MLA, or other style of citation. You must cite all your sources. Direct quotations, as used, must be cited with page number. Do not use large portions from your research text(s) as quotations. Remember that a bibliography comes at the end, and is not a substitute for citations in the paper itself. The paper should be 5 pages in length, excluding the Bibliography. You may attach Appendices. The paper must be a piece of original writing. Cutting and pasting text from the web is not permitted. Ensure that you have some scholarly sources (journal articles) and refer to some of the concepts from your textbook. Spell-check your work. Check for grammar, and correct sentence construction.
You can use the following as guidelines to structure your paper. Make sure your title has some indication to what you are analyzing—do not be so creative with the title that it obscures the focus.
· Introduction to the paper (highlight the law and the corporation you have chosen)
· Analysis:
Why did the law come about? (i.e., what did society find lacking that led to this the creation of this law?)
How the law has impacted (or how will it impact) your corporation?
What are the benefits of the law? (i.e., who has the law helped and why?)
What pressures/costs has the law placed on the corporation? (i.e., is this law fair toall concerned?)
What might be likely to happen to amend the law or change it in some way?
· Summary & Recommendations
· Bibliography
Final Paper due 3/8
PAPER PRESENTATIONS:[footnoteRef:5] You will present an oral synopsis of your term paper to the class. Paper presentations should be brief of 5 minutes each, and should consist of your basic issue, how you have analyzed it and your conclusions. Final Papers[footnoteRef:6] are due on 3/8 but paper presentations begin on 2/22. Your paper may not be completed by the presentation time, but you should have a good conceptualization of your paper by then so you can present. [5: Fulfills AACSB requirements for individual oral communication] [6: Fulfills AACSB requirements for written communication]
SHORT PAPERS: You will write 2 one-page short papers in class on a topic relevant to this class using your open textbook.

You will also be assessed on oral presentations, in a group format, and in two individual formats. With these multiple methods you should be able to do well in the class in the areas in which you are proficient, and improve on those you are not.

Plagiarism is the representation of the writing of another person or sources as one’s own work, without acknowledging the original. When in doubt, please cite, if you are still in doubt come and see me. I will be posting a power point slide presentation about this issue that goes into it into much more detail
CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR: You are expected to exhibit the highest level of professionalism and courtesy in and out of class.
· Turn off cell phones, laptops, beepers, and pagers while in class. Do not use your laptop/cell phone to undertake non-class related activities (such as checking emails)—your privilege of using laptop may be stopped if you are found to do this. Laptop use in class is strongly discouraged.
· Checking messages on the phone is strictly forbidden, grade points will be deducted

· Keep an open mind
· Try to relate outside experience to classroom discussions
· Be constructive and helpful
· Do not make sudden topic changes; recognize the flow of discussion
PEER REVIEW: Discussion of paper ideas with classmates is acceptable and in fact encouraged. However, the term paper has to be your own work—that is, single authored by you.
