Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update Curtin University is committed to supporting all our students and staff whether they are on campus, working remotely or overseas. Your health, safety and wellbeing are our priority and the continuing COVID-19 pandemic may require changes to the unit schedule, learning activities, delivery modes and assessment to provide flexible and safe options to our community. Curtin will endeavour to keep changes and disruptions to a minimum at all times. For current advice and further information visit https://www.curtin.edu.au/novel-coronavirus/.

Syllabus The unit examines the theoretical and practical perspectives used as a framework to identify change. The change strategy, tools and measurement of change are analysed.

Introduction Welcome to the Unit, Managing Change. 'Change' is a highly influential phenomena that is a part of our everyday lives, both professional and private. Virtually every facet of an organisation's functioning and practically every managerial initiative or action, unavoidably entails some form of change.  Change may be a disruptive, costly and distracting dynamic demanding attention from all stakeholders impacted by the outcomes; thus in a world of rapid and on-going change at every level of the community, the notion of 'managing change' or 'change management', becomes an essential aspect of management mindset. Innovative and diverse managerial skills that contribute to sustainability and a forward- thinking outlook become critical to good management.

Your ability to demonstrate your understanding of the character and features of organisational change and the many ways in which it manifests in organisations will be underpinned by your understanding of the theories and concepts associated with this phenomena. We trust that you will find the dynamism and often unpredictability of 'change' a compelling subject and an enjoyable, practical learning experience that will enrich your offering as a Graduate from Curtin University. We look forward to engaging you on the subject.

Unit Learning Outcomes All graduates of Curtin University achieve a set of six Graduate Capabilities during their course of study. These inform an employer that, through your studies, you have acquired discipline knowledge and a range of other skills and capabilities which employers would value in a professional setting. Each unit in your course addresses the Graduate Capabilities through a clearly identified set of learning outcomes. They form a vital part in the process referred to as assurance of learning. The learning outcomes notify you of what you are expected to know, understand or be able to do in order to be successful in this unit. Each assessment for this unit is carefully designed to test your knowledge of one or more of the unit learning outcomes. On successfully completing all of the assessments you will have achieved all of these learning outcomes.

Your course has been designed so that on graduating you will have achieved all of Curtin's Graduate Capabilities through the assurance of learning processes in each unit.

On successful completion of this unit students can: Graduate Capabilities addressed

1 Apply the different perspectives of managing organisational change

2 Analyse the strategy-making process and its application within a changing environment

3 Prepare concise and coherent arguments relating to change theory and practice in organisations

4 Assess and prepare solutions to practice situations in organisations undergoing change

Detailed information on assessment tasks

1. 1:  ASSIGNMENT 1:  Work Integrated Project Report. 35%  (2500 words)

PURPOSE: Refers to Lectures 1-5. Provides you with an opportunity to apply relevant change theory to an organisational change situation (intervention). You are required to analyse, interpret and evaluate the appropriateness and effectiveness of a change process in an organisation by using data gained via a CASE INTERVIEW provided to you. Your discussion is presented in a Report format – and demonstrates your understanding of theory and concepts covered to this point and applied critical and analytical thinking.    A: Task:    THE INTERVIEW: You are required to identify the process of 'change intervention’ as experienced by an ordinary industry / organisation / business. The Case is presented by way of an Interview which provides the data for the discussion that follows. The Interview uses seven questions to elicit the information required. Study the questions closely – as you examine the responses.

a. DETERMINE  why the change intervention was introduced. b. ANALYSE and interpret the data gathered (The Case Interview).  c. Write a carefully considered REPORT on the change and change intervention by

responding to the five sections below. [A Report Format must be followed, see

Assessments Tab on BB for guidance]:

B: Focus of the Report: The following FIVE sections become the focus of your discussion. Critically analyse and discuss as they relate to the change intervention in the Case:

I. Briefly describe the ‘change’ situation (what forced / drove the organisation to implement a programme of change?) EG:  Management react to external forces and initiate a programme of change intervention in order to deal with a problem.

OR - eg: Management proactively introduce a change in order to make their business

more competitive …etc.

II. Describe the subsequent ‘change intervention’ undertaken by management

Identifying: a. The internal and external drivers of the change (situation). b. Decide and substantiate therefore if the nature of the change was planned  or

emergent.

III. Describe the type of Strategy used behind the rationale and objectives of the change

intervention according to the goals of the management.

IV. Suggest at least two relevant and guiding change perspective(s) that management did use - or could have used to better analyse the need and direction for change in the organisation.   [Please do not use the ‘biological’ perspective]

V. Describe the interviewee’s underlying assumptions about the change - before it took place.

¡ how did they and colleagues feel, think, react to the talk of, or need for, the proposed changes?

¡ What examples of resistance from employees / colleagues were observed during the change implementation?  (Speak of co-operation or any negative behaviour that was felt / observed by the interviewee). From what levels or sections of the organisation was this resistance?

VI         Reflect and Evaluate the Change Event:  Explain what the interviewee now thinks of the changes that took place.

a. How difficult or successful was the change intervention process? (What were the challenges? People? Resistance? How was the organisation limited in its ability to make the change?).

b. Did management achieve their intended outcomes? Were their strategies correct? Why / why not?

Assessment Moderation Fair assessment through moderation

Moderation describes a quality assurance process to ensure that assessments are appropriate to the learning outcomes, and that students work is evaluated consistently by assessors. Minimum standards for the moderation of assessments are described in the Assessment and Student Progression Manual, available from policies.curtin.edu.au/findapolicy/

Pre-marking moderation The following pre-marking moderation practices are undertaken in this unit: A co-assessor is assigned to this unit to review all assessment tasks and marking criteria/rubrics, and monitor and confirm integrity of results. Assessment tasks are provided to students prior to the assessment task, marking criteria are provided to students, assessors are provided with marking guides/rubric and sufficient information to ensure fair and consistent evaluation of student work. Intra-marking / Post-marking moderation The following intra/post-moderation practices are planned for use in this unit:

l Second marking of student work samples near grade boundaries   l Second marking of borderline student work; or a process of review and validation of

decisions where students have not met the pass requirements   l Second marking of outlier samples l Analysis of the variances between markers and locations. l Second marking of a random sample to check for consistent application of marking

criteria and standards   l Post-marking of Grades across each Campus are summarised, shared  and considered to

ensure minimal variations and to provide post-marking feedback for all Tutors.

Academic Integrity (including plagiarism and cheating) Academic Integrity

Curtin's Student Charter, Academic Integrity Program (AIP), and core Values guide expectations regarding student behaviour and responsibilities. Information on these topics can be found on the Academic Integrity Website.

Academic Integrity Warnings

An Academic Integrity Warning may be issued to a student in limited circumstances and only where misconduct is not involved.

Academic Misconduct

Staff members are required to report poor academic practice and suspected misconduct. Academic Misconduct means conduct by a student that is dishonest or unfair in connection with any academic work. This includes all types of plagiarism, cheating, collusion, falsification or fabrication of content, and behaviours like falsifying medical certificates for extension. Contract cheating, the use of file sharing, translation services/apps, paraphrasing tools (text-spinners), article generators, and assignment help websites also may be considered academic misconduct.

Check your assessment instructions carefully before using any generative artificial intelligence (Gen-AI) software (e.g. Chat GPT, Midjourney, GitHub Copilot, etc.). You are not permitted to use Gen-AI software in any assessment task unless written permission is explicitly granted by the Unit Coordinator (e.g. within Blackboard or the assignment specifications). If the use of Gen-AI software has been approved, you must document its use, apply appropriate acknowledgement and attribution rules, and include a statement as to the nature and extent of the use when submitting the assessment. Unapproved, inappropriate, or undisclosed use may be dishonest or unfair behaviour, and thus considered misconduct. For further information on the use of Gen-AI software see the Academic Integrity Website.

The longer term personal, social, and financial consequences of misconduct can be severe, so please ask your tutors or unit coordinator if you need clarification or are unsure what to do. If your work is the subject of an inquiry, you will be given an opportunity to respond and appropriate support will be provided. Academic work under inquiry will not be graded until the process has concluded. Penalties for misconduct may include a warning, a reduced or nil grade, a requirement to repeat the assessment, an annulled grade (ANN) or termination from the course. For more information refer to Statute No.10 Student Discipline and Academic Misconduct Rules.

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Expectations Curtin students are expected to have reliable internet access in order to connect to OASIS email and learning systems such as Blackboard and Library Services.
