Running head: SEXUAL HARASSMENT 1
SEXUAL HARASSMENT 5
The common factor in all the cases is that the females did not speak out when the wrongs were perpetrated against them. It has taken several years for the victims to come out and speak. This often gives room for the perpetrators to continue carrying out their acts as it gives the impression that they cannot face the consequences of their actions. It is important to report a sexual harassment incident as soon as it happens as this would help the perpetrator from carrying out similar acts in the future. The fear among the victims might have stemmed from fear of victimization as stated by Onwuachi-Willig, (2018). Through the social media platforms, the victims has revolutionized ways of communicating which has given victims the courage to come out and air their concerns.
The most common social media platforms which have been used to propel the #MeToo movement are twitter and reddit with tweets and posts respectively. The posts on Reddit are mainly aimed at sexual assaults which are taking place within families and the workplace. This is also the case with twitter but with an added element where the victims are showed empathy and encouraged to continue with the #MeToo movement to help others who are going through a similar ordeal. Therefore, the social movement on sexual harassment has been a blessing to many who have undergone sexual harassment but have been living in fear to come out with their stories according to Manikonda et al, (2018). It has helped to expose public figures who have been portraying themselves as reputable figures in the society yet they have been harassing women.
Sexual harassment does not only occur to women but also to men as well. However, the #MeToo movement has shown that women are the ones who are mostly affected by incidences of sexual harassment. Therefore, there is need to include men in the #MeToo movement by showing them how to reduce cases of sexual harassment against women in the society as indicated by PettyJohn et al, (2018). This has led to the #HowIWillChange which aims at involving both men and boys in the ongoing discussion of sexual violence and carrying a self-assessment to determine their role in sustaining the rape culture. Through the tweets, men have committed to actively engage themselves in ending the rape culture. However, there are those who are resistant to the social change while others are promoting hostile resistance to social change.
In their career path, females have to interact with males. This provides a platform for sexual harassment to occur but it is paramount that they report an incident immediately it occurs. This prevents the spiraling of events and the perpetrator affecting many victims. Females are not the only ones who are exposed to sexual violence and hence men should be made aware of the same. The work environment should constantly provide training to both the female and male workers on sexual harassment. Extensive involvement of men in the #HowIWillChange movement helps in the war against gender based sexual violence. Therefore, through voicing the offenses carried out against them, carrying out job training and men involvement in the movement, this vice has a chance of being eliminated from our society.
This is an image of protestors carrying placards aimed at supporting the #MeToo social movement. One is used to show empathy and a sense of understanding for those that have gone through a similar ordeal while the other urges the society to believe women whenever they come forward with these claims.
