#Me Too Movement

What is #Me Too Movement? How was it Started

The me to movement is an online campaign which mainly focuses on aiding sexual violence survivors especially the African American girls and women as well as other women of color from poor backgrounds. Sexual assault is a significant social issue that continues to escalate by the day and the most impacted population is the female gender from minority communities with poor financial stability(Article: “About Me Too Movement”). The campaign was founded in the year 2006 by Tarana Burke. The main aim of the movement was focused at addressing the limitation of essential resources for the sexual violence survivors and be in a position to develop a society of advocates, motivated by sexual survivors, leading in the creation of solutions that reduce the rate of sexual violence in the community.

Due to poverty being a major influence of sexual violence Tarana commenced her movement with young African American women and girls from the low-income backgrounds. She established a culturally-informed curriculum to be able to discus the issue of sexual violence within the African American communities and other minority communities living low-income communities (Article: “About Me Too Movement”). Additionally, the movement through the enlightenment on the sexual violence issue, individuals and the community at large is able to address the particular need of the community such as supporting disabled survivors through crafting of events among other related community activities. The various activities enables in supporting and uplifting each other to strengthen the international movement on reducing sexual violence.

Why are women in the article called “Silence Breakers” What examples do they use to illustrate their point? Provide two examples.

The women in the article “TIME Person of the Year 2017” are regarded to be “Silence Breakers” because they were able to stand up for themselves in various situations that they experienced any form of sexual violence. Often the issues of sexual violence is not openly talked about in the community due to being related to the weakness and shame on the female gender (Article: “ Person of the Year 2017”).

Due to this aspect, most men have taken advantage of the silence and continue to engage in activities that directly or indirectly promotes sexual violence towards women or girls around them. The women are regarded as “Silence breakers” because despite their fame and wealth they were able to come out in the public and confess that they have experienced sexual violence from their male counterpart.

Most of the women named in the article have used their personal experience as an example to encourage more women to come out and report any form of sexual violence that has been committed to them (Article: “ Person of the Year 2017”). One example is how Taylor Swift was made to guilty regarding the consequences that his sexual harasser David Mueller encountered. In this situation it shows that David Mueller would have gotten away with sexual harassment if his victim was from a low-income background. Another example, is on Lobbyist Iwu who started a campaign against the California government harassment after experiencing a sexual harassment in-front of her male coworker and none of them responded. People began discouraging her on the step she was taking, she was brave enough to come out and point the sexual violence issue in the California government. All the women named in the article might be famous and wealth but in one way or the other have experienced various forms of sexual violence and they have been brave enough to stand for their rights and exposing the offenders of the sexual activities.
