1. Select three active reading strategies from the list below to discuss.

2. For each strategy you select, identify a specific passage or direct quote from one of the unit’s readings (reading logs 2, 3, 4 or 5) that you can use to explain how you used the strategy.

1. Describe your use of that strategy with the selected passage.  What did you do? How did it help you make sense of the passage?  Or, how did it help you remember the content of the passage?   

List of Strategies

1. Inferring the meaning of an unfamiliar word from context clues and word parts

2. Distinguishing between a main idea versus a supporting detail; or, distinguishing between the claim and the evidence that validates it

3. Developing guide questions and finding answers to your guide questions

4. Recognizing the types of evidence that authors use to validate their thesis.

5. Using an awareness of the structure of an academic argument to locate the thesis

6. Using background knowledge or a concrete experience to connect with and gain a deeper understanding of a concept

Scoring:

Grade	Description - Each strategy discussion must have this quality.
A	Complete with clear and detailed explanation of how the strategy was used without copying language from the Guidebook.
B	Complete, while not as detailed an explanation as an “A.” Offers evidence that the strategy was applied. Minor issues with written expression
C	Complete, but with minimal explanation  - some evidence that the strategy was applied. Lacks clarity in written expression.
D	Incomplete - missing information. Described the strategy but did not illustrate it with a specific passage.  Poor written expression makes it difficult to understand.  Copied explanations from Guidebook or course instruction rather than used your own words
F	Not submitted or incorrect explanation that shows you did not understand how to use the strategy
