Subject: Workplace Morale in the Retail Industry

Date: October 10th, 2019

Good employee morale in the workplace is essential to a successful business environment. Satisfied workers will show up to work with positive attitudes, willing to do more quality work than those who are not satisfied. Low employee morality decreases the productivity of an organization. It is vital to ensure employees remain satisfied with their jobs in order to maintain a productive work environment. Below, I have listed three ideas to help decrease low employee morale in the workplace.

1. Implementing a Bonus Plan

A possible solution could be implementing a bonus plan. Whenever an employee reaches a certain sales amount, they will be eligible for an end of year bonus. There should be a variety of bonus plans. The more they sell, the higher their bonus will be. There should be a capped amount, and a minimum amount. This gives employees the opportunity to choose how hard they wish to work. There will be both reasonable goals to reach, and higher goals to reach. This accounts for people that have extra time to put into their work, and those who do not.

Incentives are a good form of motivation. If the employee knows they will be rewarded for working harder, they will. Money is an excellent motivator. Creating a bonus plan will cause the employees to work competitively, increasing the productivity rate. Having the pressure of being watched for will encourage the employees to perform more effectively in the workplace.

2. Allowing for Flexible Hours

Sometimes working busy, inflexible hours can be draining. Employees need to feel like they have time for their personal life. Another possible solution to increase employee morale is to allow employees to work more flexible hours. Allowing employees time for their personal lives will cause them to be happier, and more encouraged when they are at work.

One way to implement this is to hire more workers, allowing for more people to be scheduled at different times. This gives each employee more variety for their scheduling, A good strategy would be to create a form with everyone's preferred hours, then schedule based on that. Of course everyone's preferred hours cannot be accounted for, but more people will be satisfied with when they are working.

3. Investing in Employee Training

Many employees in the retail industry may feel underqualified, or inferior when it comes to the skills necessary to make sales. The retail industry can be intimidating, as it deals with human interactions. Investing in an in depth employee training can raise the confidence level of employees, also raising the sales rate.

Being more confident in a job will cause someone to feel happier at work. It creates a positive work environment. The in depth training should include tips on how to interact with customers, how to talk confidently, how to talk about the products, and how to persuade people into buying things. With this knowledge, employees will be happier, and have a higher employee morale rate.

Summary

This may seem like a lot to implement into one company, but the turnout will be worth it. The bonus program will cause people to work harder, having flexible hours will cause people to feel respected and happier to work, and the employee training will give them confidence when making sales. These are all possible solutions, and are not too tough to implement, just requires more funds to be available.
