Memoir Essay

August of 2017, found me eagerly awaiting the experience of becoming a part of Savannah Technical College. When I was small, my dad used to tell me, “Be an independent and strong man, to whom nobody in this world can ever try to bend.” I will always remember his words as not only he became my inspiration but he also became my role model. My childhood was very pleasant. I had a loving family, friends and a happy life in India. But in August of 2009 a life turning event happened. My family and I moved to United states for better education and work opportunities. I always thought, I would not be able to continue my studies as I was not very intelligent and not fluent in English. But because of my mom’s strength and thinking about opportunities I finished my middle school and high school with good grades. After finishing my High school, now it was the time to go to College.

Never was this clearer that when I was 17 and I had to choose between two important Career options (Engineering and Business Management). When I was a kid I always dreamt of becoming a Computer Engineer. Dreams change with time and my dream of becoming an engineer also changed. My family has a business background and so are business minded. Eventually I decided to choose Business Management as my career option. That day stands out in my mind because after moving to United states, I realized that I wanted to do totally opposite of what I used to dream of. But I was afraid of taking new chances as I was the only member of my family who spoke English fluently; and I already had tons of new responsibilities which scared me of not overcoming it. Two years of high school were the most difficult part of my life as I was just getting adjusted with the countries social and cultural norms. There were a lot of times when I just wanted to quit everything and go back to my homeland, but my dad’s words kept me going. He says, “there are some storms which you have to face alone and that is the only thing which will make you even more stronger.” Not only his words helped resilient but also helped me find the potential in myself. With this in mind, I finally decided business as my major and I also got accepted at Savannah Technical College.

August 2017 is the time when I started the new phase of my life. College is like a journey. You pack your things and sail out on a ship which will take you to far horizons. My first day of college was very terrifying. That day, I had so many things in mind from what to wear, how my all classes will be, will I be able to make any friend to will I even be able to finish my college. Campus of my college is humongous. I had a really hard time finding my classes, but then I got familiar with everything as days passed by. All of my classes of fall semester were really intriguing except English 1100 class. Providing that, English is my third language and we never really had to write essay back in India. I always had a hard time of putting my thoughts into writing. My professor always used to say that in English “there is nothing wrong or right. Everything is right as long as you can prove your point.” I tried the best I could on the first part and made a B. Regardless, I learnt a lot of new things that helped me make a better grade on my second part.

On the other hand, one of my greatest experience I had in my freshman year was, not only being getting an A in my major classes, but also getting involved in many activities and community services. I learnt a lot new thing by making new friends from different countries; with whom you talk and share about other culture and share different types of food with each other. Apart from that, I was also able to make some Indian friends who made my college life more exciting. You also have to learn to balance your academic and work and social life as extra-curricular activities can easily divert focus from studies. Not to mention, watching those kids smiling and playing is also one of my best memory I will always have from my freshman year of college.

College life can sometimes be very sweet and sometimes very bitter, but extra-ordinary every day. My freshman year of college went by very fast. As I look back and remember of all the things I have achieved and learnt, it was the best first year anyone could ever hope for. I am looking forward to my sophomore year and try to climb every step of ladder that will lead me to achieve my goal of becoming a successful Business man.
