MEMORANDUM

TO: JP Whatford

FROM: Shihao Sun

DATE: August 30, 2018

SUBJECT: Memo Analysis of Second Scholarly/Academic Article

Summary

The second academic source for the assignment is a sports journal written by Joshua Senne in 2016. The journal is a summary of the challenges women in sports have faced in the past and still continue to fight against despite milestones in bridging the gap in sport participation, for example, introduction of the Title IX Statue. Women still undergo stereotyping and are perceived less capable in sports especially because sport has been branded as masculine (Senne, 2016). The author further argues that Title IX has not completely solved the gender stereotype in sports as women are still less represented in the media and are ridiculed right from a young age and discouraged from participating in sports.

Analysis

The source is very compelling as it relates to the topic of study. It clearly outlines the vices in sports that need to be addressed and how they have affected women in sports. Sport has been branded a male activity and women’s sports as ‘other.’ Gender marking by the media which only recognizes male athletes and male sports and also representation of women in sports based on their personal attributes such as beauty and shape of the body have been addressed.

The media less recognizes women and their sports and the society also gives little attention to mould female athletes right from the young ages. We end up with a male dominated sport industry and this has cost countries and societies in general. The article further outlines the various strategies towards a gender sensitive sport such as enlightening the society to stop assigning the youth masculine and feminine roles and also to stop ridiculing women in sports. Encouraging women to take up positions of coaches could be of great help too.

There is still a lot that needs to be done right from the societal level to the national level. The media has been bestowed with a responsibility of recognizing women’s sports as one of the efforts of creating awareness and popularity of the same. Eliminating a one gender dominance in sports has been identified as a responsibility of the society and the relevant bodies.

Moving Forward

The fact that women feel less recognized in sports and that less attention is given to their sports only means they cannot come out strongly to participate alongside their male counterparts. Diverse sport organizations are found to be more successful than those involving men only (Senne, 2016). The performance of these organizations is refined when gender equity is fought for in sports.

Gender equity in sports has numerous benefits which cannot be overlooked as it contributes to an increased female participation and eventually empowerment of the female generation. Women are as competitive as their male counterparts and their ability to successfully participate in sports and give the best should not be overlooked. This will go a long way into growing economies, having an empowered generation and ensuring that opportunities for growth are not only preserved for the males. Dicers societies, diverse workforces and moving away from gender stereotypes is what will save the situation. Sport governance and leadership should consider female participation and ensure that stereotypes are eliminated.
