MEETING
On August 13th, 2017, I was privileged to attend a political meeting organized by the municipal officials. The meeting began at 9 am and was held at the Municipal Hall. The meeting saw an attendance of over 1000 people, mostly from the region. They were encouraged to attend to participate in the various forums and discussion topics. In attendance were the chief of police department, the minister of health and the chief justice the hall was packed than it was expected. Public matters are critical. I, just like most of the attendees, participated in the forum by asking and answering questions according to the areas that affected us most.
The meeting offered a platform for the discussion of a variety of topics which I found interesting and pleasant to discuss. Climate change being a trending issue was among the first to be addressed. The officials had invited various environmentalists who educated us on the significance of safeguarding the environment. The climate change stressors were highlighted and how they bring about global warming. Explanations were given of the relationship between our ways of life and the climate change trend. Consequently, issues such as fuels, automotive, cutting down of trees among other environment related topics were tackled. This gave room for people to raise questions in regard to the remedies and adaptive measures applicable to curb this menace (Gillard, 2011), (Nemeth, 2012).
Issues in regard to incarceration were addressed especially the sentencing regulations. Sentencing Guidelines refer to the laws and rules that govern one sentencing policy for people and organizations who have faced charges of felony and gross (Class A) misconduct. In the United States, these guidelines are executed by United States national courts. These requirements and procedures are not applicable in less gross faults and charges. Their main aim is to relieve the sentencing inequalities that were noted to be prominent in previous sentencing policies by research. Under the newly reformed sentencing rules, the convict receives determinate and the actual sentence limits regarding years (Haines, Bowman & Woll, 2011).
Another topic discussed was the safety of dolphins since the locals were hunting them. In the recent past, research studies have revealed that dolphins are intelligent and have a capability of learning as individuals. Further studies indicated that dolphins are intellectually gifted in the sense that, other than learning as individuals, they can as well pass the acquired knowledge and skills to others. Dolphins have been applauded for their abilities to coexist and interact with human beings and the capabilities to learn from human beings. The orator talked of how dolphins are an intelligent animal that should be assisted with accidental injury when humans and dolphins are both fishing in the same area (Underhill, 2013). Consequently, he advocated for preservation of the species to avoid extinction.
Among the topics that we expected to be addressed but were not included improvement of the health facilities, regulations of road use, building of more public institutions such as schools and dispensaries and the police brutality meted on the public. The meeting came to an end at around 4pm. I liked the interactions we had and the whole experience was pleasant. While we are encouraged to participate in public forums, I had a taste of democracy.
