Media Guided Responses

There are many questions to consider with the topic of media. The following are only some of the questions caregivers, educators, and researchers consider:

At what age should children be exposed to media?

How much media should children be exposed to?

What type of media should children be exposed to (e.g. tablets, television, phones, computers, programs, etc.)?

What role should media have in schools?

Please answer the question prompts under each response thoroughly. You should support your opinion with information from the readings; however, you also may share your own experiences and observations in the responses. Use the following as guide to receive full credit.

All questions for each response prompt (e.g. Response 1, Response 2) are fully answered. For each prompt, there are at least two pieces of information from the readings supporting your opinion. Information can be noted with the use of specific facts, quotes, or cited with page number.

Response 1: Media and Language

The following two articles address the connection between media and language:

Language Use Decreases in Young Children and Caregivers When Television is On, Study Finds

Sherry Turkle on the Power of Talking (Face to Face) – Boston Globe

After reading both articles, consider your opinion on the following questions (please explain your reasoning):

At what age should children be exposed to media? How much?

Do you think when determining media exposure, the impact on language should be considered?

Does media (e.g. television, smartphone, etc.) impact your own language abilities?

Response 2: Media Usage

The following two articles address screen time and smart phone usage:

On Kids and Screens, A Middle Way Between Fear and Hype (NPR)

What’s the Right Age for a Child to Get a Smartphone? (NY Times)

Both articles consider the pros and cons of technology. After reading the articles, consider your opinion on the following (please explain your reasoning):

What was one pro and one con you found noteworthy? Explain why.

What guidelines do you think are appropriate for children regarding media, considering age, amount, type?

At what age is it appropriate for children to have smartphones (in your opinion)?

Response 3: Media and School (Pros and Cons of Tablets vs. Textbooks)

ProCon.org is a nonprofit organization with researchers who examine the pros and cons of controversial issues. With the issue of tablets versus textbooks, the researchers provide a background summary of tablet use in various states and school districts. Reading this background will help you understand the movement towards the use of tablets in schools. The researchers also present 15 pros and 17 cons for tablet use in schools.

After reviewing the pros and cons, select 3 pros and 3 cons that you found particularly noteworthy for the different sides. Explain why you found these arguments noteworthy. Consider the following questions:

What is your opinion of tablet use? Is it appropriate? Inevitable? Did the arguments/information presented in the article change your thinking about media use in schools? If so, how? Please explain your reasoning.
