Choose an example of “media” - Analysis Paper: This assignment is designed to provoke your thinking from a source outside the classroom. You are to find a relevant example from a “media” source (Film, TV, Internet, Magazine, etc.). The paper will be approximately 2- pages in length. I expect you to go above and beyond with your ideas and effort in linking concepts and proving your understanding or even making an argument against what the text is saying. This means you will use at least two theories out of the book from this term, or you may use three to four various concepts. Or you can mix and match and use one theory and two other concepts. (This section should be clear in your paper). Your grade will be dependent on which example you choose and how it might relate to the chapters we've read or in-class discussion. What film character or TV scene, for example, can signify adapting to another person by culture, gender, ethnicity, or language? Or several examples might connect to the perception process, conflict, or relationships and if you are using a scene or theme from a movie, make sure to be detailed and explain to me what is happening. Make sure to BE SPECIFIC with your example. Finally, you should have at least two credible sources from outside the class to contribute to class content (library’s database and/or academic journals are good options). 1. Utilize credible sources from outside the classroom to support your content. 2. Structure your paper with the appropriate content & sections. 3. Provide a clear description of the concept(s) or textbook theories you are using. Also clearly define the relevant, specific example you are using through your ‘media’ example. 4. Attempt to effectively synthesize these areas. * Additional information will be provided about this assignment in class. The essay will be graded based upon the degree to which you have included the points listed above, its organization, the relevance and appropriateness and specificity of the example you have chosen. Furthermore, the thoroughness, clarity of your connections, and the quality of your writing is important. This is not a library research paper but use at least two credible sources. If you do refer to books, articles, websites or other sources, must reference them and have a works cited page. Also refer to materials from the text or lecture simply by noting, for example: Adler, p. 98; or Haider lecture, Oct. 20. Any other sources you cite should use either APA (American Psychological Association) or MLA style, just be consistent. I’ve decided to use as my example the show “Atypical”. The scene is about the characters Paige

Hardaway (Jenna Boyd) and main character Sam Gardner (Keir Glichrist), Paige likes Sam and is trying to

figure out a way to ask him out. Sam is on the Autism spectrum so his verbal communication and

reasoning is a bit different from ours. So, he’s not listening or picking up on all the non-verbal and fliting

Paige is doing and Paige is not sure what to do with his reactions to her forwardness. She defiantly

Breaks the relationship culture.

I will connect this to the textbook using these examples; by perception, relationship culture,

incomprehensibility, selective listening, and I will also connect it to uncertainty reduction theory
