Becoming a Scholar of Change
In the community we live in, children, families, and society face various challenges that can be best addressed and understood through education. Unless they're enlightened on the negative impact of some cultural practices and societal believes, then shall such practices be abandoned, and the society will grow (Peer, 2015). One way to approach this is through problem orientation and how to set them in the current knowledge and the world's view on them. Different people view problems differently based on their experience, skills, and knowledge; hence orientation shall be the key to function with skills needed to solve the problem.
To solve this problem strategically, we need to define the problem such as child abuse. Then, we come up with the best alternative remedies, after which we make choices on the solution to use then finally implement that remedy (Catalino & Meyer, 2016). This approach requires a positive direction, like seeing the problem as a challenge or a chance to learn rather than just being silent. Then there should be a belief that the problem is solvable not only as a mindset but using the strategy discussed above, then built self-confidence by trying to solve the problem.
The study and understanding of these challenges, I purpose to study and eradicate them to enable the society to grow, make a better and stable society by eradicating poverty, family disputes, and harmful cultural practices. My greatest desire in life, having observed how society is blinded and backward was to be agent of change. The best way to reach people was through education. Being according to the same will enable me to get young people as we interact in schools. Through organizing self-awareness talks, and life skills will make it possible to impact their lives significantly. The vision of creating a better society is being made possible through training young people who shall come in support in later days. They have been sourcing funds and other materials to support bringing families and children up. However, there's been a challenge in their response, societal rejection in disowning their cultural practices, through educating their children, they have been transformed.

When reflecting on how I can be a scholar of change, I hope to build confidence and resources in the families of the young children that I connect with through whichever position I may fulfill. As educators, we often tout that the families and parents of the children are their biggest adovcates, especially as they are the individual that follows the progress of the child from infancy through graduation and beyond. However, not all families feel prepared for such a task – helping their children and navigating the educational system. My mom said to me in 3rd grade that I had surpassed her ability to help – and she was the only parent with a college degree! Building resources, strategies, and advocacy with families is a goal I hope to tackle.
I’m not waiting for the degree to get started! I feel very fortunate to work at a Leader-in-Me Lighthouse school which encourages leadership in the students, but also the educators. After our Module 2, Assignment 2 project (the podcast), I reached out to our Lighthouse Chair to discuss options for extending this mode of information delivery to the families. This aligns with our Lighthouse goals of sharing the Leader-in-Me for the home connection and I have been given the green light to start the next steps. We’ve discussed how this can be utilized to share academic strategies, Leader-in-Me frameworks, preparation for middle school, and so much more by pulling other educators in for interviews and highlight segments. While this is still in the planning phases and is just the beginning, I am excited to share more with families in a manner that is convenient and easy for them.
One of my largest challenges in this endeavor will be time management. Managing a classroom and doctoral studies at the same time is huge. Adding in family life, social life, and special interest is big. Then, accounting for leadership within the school is the icing on the cake, especially when we have three new-to-the school, new-to-the-state teachers in my grade level this year plus a student teacher in my room. Balancing my current demands while also following my passions, may be difficult, but I have amazing supports. My instructional aide knows how I run and fully supports all the endeavors I dive into. She will be available to help prep, communicate, and encourage whenever the going gets tough!

Becoming a Scholar of Change
As a scholar of change, my goal is to promote social change in the students, community, and school where I work and live. According to Bourn, "Many societies around the world, teachers are looked upon as the individuals who can help to bring about positive changes in the lives of people" (Bourn, 2016, p. 63). To accomplish this, I need to be actively involved in activities in the community and provide educational resources that promote child development and maternal health. I can do this by using my education, knowledge, and experience to impact the lives of others and help bridge the gap between the community and academia.
Action Steps
To support my journey to become an agent of change. I will continue to further my education here at the University of Walden, whose mission is preparing scholars to become agents of change (Walden University, 2020). During my time here at Walden, I have been allowed to apply what I have learned to help impact the lives of the students I work with and the community I serve—helping children develop the skills and techniques needed to become productive members of society within my school environment and improve social skills and behavior.
Becoming knowledgeable about becoming an agent of social change has led me to join the Teachers Associations to stay current on the laws that affect education. Secondly, joining my school's Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and helping organize events that encourage parents to get involved in their child's education and learn how to assist them at home. I will provide classes and resources for parents to meet the educational need of their children. Last, becoming a member of our PBIS team, I can help plan the social-emotional lessons to help children develop empathy and other skills needed to connect with others in their environment.
Support Young Children and their Families
Being a scholar of change, I can help parents by supporting children and families in the following ways:
· Provide homework to assist students where they are
· Provide parents with examples to help support students at home
· Provide resources and training for parents to assist them with positive behavior in and out of school
· Increase parental involvement in the classroom
· Increase cultural activities in the classroom
Support and Challenges
One of the challenges of becoming a scholar of change is that change does not happen overnight; it requires planning, support from administration and peers, and implementation. Being in a supportive school and having a supportive administration team, I feel they will support new ideas and training. They encourage us to identify problems and come up with a plan to resolve them. The Second Grade Team is very supportive and listens to new ideas and suggestions. They value everyone's options to help make positive changes in the lives of our students—the support of my plans and activities in and after school. Having the support of my administration and fellow teachers will allow me to share, implement programs that will improve scholar behavior, academic and parents' involvement.
Existing Support to Overcome Challenges.
The administration team always encourages us to promote change within our school, families, and community. They believe having a positive connection with all stakeholders is the only way to provide our students with the best opportunities to succeed. Providing open communications with parents decreases behavior and increases academics. Having a supportive administration team allows me to build on my relationships with families and provide positive changes.
