Module 1 | Part 1: Developing an Academic and Professional Network

I have identified and secured the participation of the following academic (at least two) and professional (at least two) individuals and/or teams to form the basis of my network. This network will help me to clarify my vision for success and will help guide me now and in the future.

Directions: Complete the information below for each member of your network. For more than four entries repeat the items below with details of your additional network member(s) in the ‘ADDITIONAL NETWORK MEMBERS’ section.

NETWORK MEMBER 1

Name: Jasmine Heraux

Title: RN, BSN, MSN, ACNP

Organization: University of Miami Hospital

Academic or Professional: Professional

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program or Post-Master’s Certificate (PMC) and as a practicing nurse:

Notes:

I decided to work with Jasmine Heraux because, as an acute care nurse practitioner, she brings real-world knowledge that helps me in my MSN studies. Seeing how she explains complex lab results to patients and families in a clear and caring way has taught me how important good communication is in nursing. She also takes time to show me how she makes decisions when caring for unstable patients, like adjusting medications or working with the respiratory team. These moments encourage me to look beyond daily tasks and improve my clinical thinking. Jasmine often shares research articles and asks me to think about why certain treatments are used, which helps me connect classroom learning to real-life situations. Her guidance has been important for my growth and has made me feel more confident as I get ready for graduate-level work and the role of an acute care nurse practitioner. Studies show that mentorship in nursing not only builds clinical skills but also helps connect what we learn in school to what we do in practice (Vogelpohl et al., 2018).

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program or Post-Master’s Certificate (PMC) and as a practicing nurse:

Notes:

Working alongside Murianne Coriloan, an acute care nurse practitioner in our CVICU who focuses on cardiothoracic surgeries, has played a pivotal role in my growth as a nurse. During challenging patient cases, her guidance has been invaluable, offering reassurance when I needed it most and motivating me to continually improve my skills. Murianne’s influence goes beyond traditional mentorship; she has fueled my ambition to become an acute care nurse practitioner. Her encouragement reminds me that academic achievement is only one part of the journey to becoming a nurse practitioner who makes a real difference in patients’ lives. Experiences like this build clinical judgment, self-assurance, and professional readiness in nursing (Nowell et al., 2017).

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program or Post-Master’s Certificate (PMC) and as a practicing nurse:

Notes:

I chose the Student Success Advising Team because their ongoing support will be vital during my MSN program. Unlike the admissions office, which assists students before they enroll, the advising team continues to provide guidance throughout the entire program (Walden University, n.d.-a). They help with course selection and registration and offer resources when challenges arise. Having an assigned advisor ensures I will have expert help navigating program requirements and staying on track with my academic goals. This assistance is especially important for managing the demands of graduate studies alongside my responsibilities as a nurse. With their encouragement, access to resources, and tailored strategies for achievement, the Student Success Advising Team helps me not only finish my degree but also gain the confidence to use my skills effectively in clinical practice.

Module 2 | Part 2: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics

I have analyzed the relationship between academic integrity and writing, as well as the relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics. I have also identified strategies I intend to pursue to maintain integrity and ethics of my academic work while a student of the MSN program or PMC, as well as my professional work as a nurse throughout my career. The results of these efforts are shared below.

Directions: In the space below craft your analysis/writing sample, including Part 1 (The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity) and Part 2 (Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work).

Part 1: Writing Sample: The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity

In the space below write a 2- 3-paragraph analysis that includes the following:

· Explanation for the relationship between academic integrity and writing

· Explanation for the relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics

· Cite at least 2 resources that support your arguments, being sure to use proper APA formatting.

· Use Grammarly and Turnitin to improve the product.

· Explain how Grammarly, Turnitin, and paraphrasing contributes to academic integrity

Academic integrity is the commitment to honesty, trust, and responsibility in the pursuit of knowledge. According to Yeltekin (2024), it forms the bedrock of scholarly writing. It In practical terms, this means that writing is not merely about presenting ideas but about accurately attributing the origins of those ideas. Every citation is a gesture of respect toward the original thinker and a pledge of transparency to the reader. When this pact is broken through plagiarism or misrepresentation, the entire academic project suffers, as it becomes difficult to distinguish genuine innovation from intellectual theft. Therefore, the relationship is symbiotic: strong writing built on citations and original thought reinforces academic integrity, and a commitment to integrity elevates the quality and credibility of one’s writing.

This foundation of integrity in academia is a direct precursor to ethical behavior in professional nursing practice. Scholarly ethics, the principles of honesty, accountability, and rigor in research, are not confined to the classroom; they are the same principles that underpin evidence-based practice and patient care (Kishan et al., n.d.). A nurse who meticulously cites sources and avoids data fabrication in an academic paper is cultivating the same discipline required to accurately document a patient’s chart or administer the correct medication dosage. Kishan et al. (n.d.) argue, the values inherent in academic integrity, such as honesty and responsibility, are "inextricably linked to the values of professional nursing practice" (p. 14). A breach in academic ethics can signal potential for future professional misconduct, making this training a critical component of nursing education.

Tools like Grammarly, Turnitin, and the practice of paraphrasing are essential for upholding these standards. Grammarly assists with clarity and originality, helping a writer express their own thoughts more effectively and avoid unintentional plagiarism (Jung, 2025). Turnitin acts as a safeguard, providing a check against copying the work of others and encouraging students to correct improper citations before submission (Jung, 2025). True paraphrasing, which involves fully understanding a concept and then explaining it in one’s own voice while still crediting the source, is the practical application of academic integrity. It demonstrates mastery of the material rather than mere repetition. Together, these strategies help students build the ethical muscle memory needed for a trustworthy professional life.

PART 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work

Expand on your thoughts from Part 1 by:

Identifying and describing strategies you intend to pursue to maintain integrity and ethics of your 1) academic work while a student of the MSN program or PMC, and 2) professional work as a nurse throughout your career. Include a review of resources and approaches you propose to use as a student and a professional.

To help me remain academically honest, I will utilize such tools as Grammarly and Turnitin to enhance my paraphrasing and citation abilities as an MSN student. I will also consider time management to prevent making hurried decisions and making sure that research and proofreading is full. I will use Walden University Library and writing support, study groups, and collaboration guidelines. This proactive strategy will guarantee the incorporation of integrity into the process of learning (Lynch et al., 2022). This academic honesty establishment is also directly applicable to my practical nursing experience. The approach I will use in ensuring that I uphold ethical integrity in my career practice is that I will approach patient documentation just like I do with academic writing by ensuring that each entry is accurate, truthful, and complete. I will adhere to the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics, which mandates honesty as a non-negotiable standard, and regularly review its provisions to guide complex decision-making (ANA, 2015). I will also seek mentorship and engage in continuous professional development through organizations like the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) to stay current on ethical dilemmas in healthcare. By viewing myself as a lifelong learner and a steward of the profession’s trust, I aim to embody the principle noted by Brown et al. (2020) that the integrity cultivated in school is a critical predictor of trustworthy, professional conduct at the bedside.

Step 2: Justification

I would recommend this article to inform professional practice because it provides evidence-based insights into the complex role of nurse practitioners in managing chronic pain. The study not only identifies prescribing patterns but also highlights systemic barriers such as insurance coverage and regulatory limitations, which directly affect patient care. Importantly, it underscores the unique position of NPs to balance safe opioid prescribing with increased use of nonpharmacologic strategies. These findings are highly applicable to practice and can inform educational programs, policy advocacy, and clinical decision-making.

Step 2: Summary of Analysis

Craft a summary (2-3 paragraph) below that includes the following:

· Describe your approach to identifying and analyzing peer-reviewed research

· Identify at least two strategies that you would use that you found to be effective in finding peer-reviewed research

· Identify at least one resource you intend to use in the future to find peer-reviewed research

My approach to identifying and analyzing peer-reviewed research involved using the Walden University Library’s nursing databases, particularly CINAHL and MEDLINE, to ensure I located credible and relevant sources. I focused on my area of interest, chronic pain management, and narrowed the search using keywords such as “nurse practitioners,” “chronic pain,” and “prescribing practices.” After identifying this article, I analyzed it for methodology, key findings, and its applicability to advanced nursing practice. This systematic approach helped ensure that the evidence I chose was trustworthy and directly relevant to my professional development.

Two strategies I found compelling for locating peer-reviewed research were the use of Boolean operators (e.g., “AND,” “OR”) to refine searches and applying filters such as “peer-reviewed” and “last five years” to guarantee current, scholarly results. These techniques reduced the number of irrelevant articles and improved the precision of my search. Another helpful strategy was reviewing article abstracts to quickly determine alignment with my topic before committing to a full read, which saved time and kept my research focused.

In the future, I intend to continue using the Walden University Library, particularly its subject-specific research guides. These guides provide curated databases, tutorials, and citation tools designed explicitly for advanced nursing students, making them invaluable for graduate-level work. I also plan to explore PubMed for supplemental searches, as it offers a vast collection of biomedical research that can complement my coursework and practice-based inquiries.

Module 6 | Part 4: Finalizing the Plan
