Running head: GRANT PROPOSAL 1
GRANT PROPOSAL 2
People with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are considered to be mentally challenged in the society. This stigma is caused by the fact that people do not know or understand much about this condition. It is clear that children and adults with ADHD can lead their normal life. Many people believe that ADHD is not a medical condition but rather an excuse for sloppiness and laziness. There is also a lot of negativity on the use of psychiatric drugs. The fact that ADHD can undermine education performance also increases the stigma in the society. This project will be for educating the parents and the caregivers of the people living with ADHD on various aspects of the condition such as risk factors, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment. These are the people who are mostly involved in the daily care of the children and adults living with ADHD. Comment by Microsoft Office User: These are all statements of fact that require citations/support for credibility.
It is clear that in United States alone; approximately 6.4 million children within the ages of four to 17 years have ADHD. About 30-60% of the children continue to show the symptoms of ADHD even in adulthood. Therefore, this condition requires that the right mechanisms be put in place to ensure that the effects are reduced. The effects of stigma in people living with ADHD affect their quality of life. It results to social problems; workplace discrimination and the greatest harm is self-stigmatization. Therefore, addressing these issues is important in ensuring that they live a normal life. Comment by Microsoft Office User: Where is evidenced base support? You may be correct, but academic sources are needed for credibiity
To tackle this problem, my organization aims at increasing education of the caregivers and the society at large about ADHD. This will include education on the causes of the condition, the risk factors, diagnosis, treatment options and other management practices. It will also incorporate educating the people on how to live with a child or an adult who has ADHD because they portray some characteristics which might not be accommodated. One of the most important topics to be covered is on stigmatization where we will educate the people on the effects it has on the patients and how to help them overcome it. This project will be carried out for a period of one year. The success of this project will be in accordance to the vision and mission of my non-profit organization which seeks to ensure equality for people living with ADHD in the society.
