I. Introduction
A. The novel by Haddon presents various challenges that individuals with autism face in the society and the solutions to those challenges. This is achieved through the presentation of the characters and their roles in the novel.
B. Living with children with special needs can be rewarding if they, themselves, and their needs can be understood. Through such understanding, others can accommodate and support their learning and development.
C. In The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Christopher Boone exhibits autistic behavior that a caring parent might have recognized and remedied had that parent had the knowledge we have today.
II. Body
A. Autism Challenges in the Society
1. Mistreatment
a) Christopher was mistreated by his father
b) The police officer arrested Christopher despite his condition
2. Isolation
a) Christopher was taken to different schools from the rest of the children
b) Christopher is separated from his mother at a tender age
B. Relationship
1. Difficulties forming relationships
a) Christopher appears not to have developed a good relationship with his father despite living with him
b) Christopher hates being hugged by his father
2. Impaired Emotional development
a. Christopher does not appear to be affect by the loss of his mother
3. Trust issues
a) Christopher does not trust his father for killing Wellington.
"I had to get out of the house. Father had murdered Wellington. That meant he could murder me, because I couldn't trust him, even though he had said 'Trust me,' because he had told a lie about a big thing." (Haddon, 2003, p. 122)
b) Christopher develops trust issues with his father after he realized that his mother was alive.
"Then I stopped reading the letter because I felt sick. Mother had not had a heart attack. Mother had not died. Mother had been alive all the time. And Father had lied about this." (Haddon, 2003, p. 112).
C. Language and communication
1. Problems in language development
a. Christopher’s thoughts often run together in a run-on sentence and do not follow proper grammar.
2. Loves logic
a. Loves geometrical shape
b. Uses logic to investigate the murder of Wellington
D. Repetitive and Obsession
a. Obsessed with numbers
b. Proceeds to investigate the murder of wellington despite warnings from his father
III. Conclusion
Throughout the novel, Christopher Boone exhibits autistic behavior. This is shown by his difficulties in forming relationships, problems in communication and language development, and his obsession with numbers.
