An inquiry essay is different from a traditional thesis-driven essay in that your essay is organized around an inquiry (a question or a wondering). Unlike a thesis, the inquiry you began with (Can tai chi help me get off my pain meds for rheumatoid arthritis?) has the capacity to change and evolve as your investigation grows. Your paper's direction may shift, expand or clarify as your knowledge on your topic also shifts, expands or clarifies.
DUE 11:59 pm Sunday November 21: Inquiry Essay (15%): 4 double-spaced pages. In the end, a mind-body practice that restores and strengthens your body and mind is a practice of self-care. What are the elements in your life that you know could benefit with a mind-body practice of your choice? The contemplative practice you choose should involve both the mind and body and should be accessible for you to either experience or directly observe in Chicago (videos are okay this semester considering the COVID outbreaks). Your essay will include the following components: (1) Third-Person account: at least one research article from an academic journal found in the library database (citation required), (2) Second-Person account (choose): a) reading or video by a vetted authority within the tradition, or b) personal interview with a knowledgeable teacher within that tradition (citation required); and (3) First-Person account: personal experience (attending at least one free introductory class or trying this out for yourself following a video). Include at least one or two images to illustrate some important points made in your essay, but make sure that the written portion = 4 double-spaced pages MINIMUM--please take the minimum # of pages seriously; anything less than 4 full pages of written text will be returned with a zero grade.
Attached is a list of many different topics that previous 212 students have used for their paper. Please bring your questions and topics to class, or you may email me for feedback on your topic. Looking forward to reading these.
