While, for many of us older individuals, social media was just a way to connect with friends and post pictures, in todays world, it's utilized for everything from popularity, business, or even as a remembrance of past loved ones. Culture plays a big role in what is popular and what attracts attention. Memes are a quick way to digest something and share it without the time investment of a show or news clip. Bashir describes how easily accessible and deliverable it is over an early morning browse of his phone (Bashir, 2021, para. 1). Utilizing memes as a way to market allows the consumer relate through comedic relief, while also easily sharing to the masses, which keeps the subliminal message going.
Another successful marketing strategy on the direct opposite side of the quick light hearted nature of memes, is podcasts. Podcasts were highly successful during the COVID19 lockdown as people were home alone and would consume the information of whatever topics they were interested in. This has transitioned rather well, even in the aftermath, as my 30 minute drive to work everyday with my wife, typically consists of us listening to the different stories of serial killers throughout history which enthralls her. It is not lost on my however, that their are breakouts for ads multiple times through our 30 minute session. Gimlet Media, one of the largest podcasters, notably received a $5 million dollar investment from an advertising giant in the industry (OpenStax, 2021), showing that their is a substantial opportunity for marketing in the podcast environment which can be very lucrative if correctly utilized.
How have you seen these two different potentials interact with your day to day life over the past few years?
Respectfully, Matt
